They are on display in Raleigh. I am thinking about going Sunday. Is it worth it? What else was there besides the scrolls?

These are the real ones that were found in the caves next to the dead sea between 1944 and 1956. They are scrolls that have the old testament written on them.

saw them a few weeks ago when I was in Jerusalem. The ones on display in the US are mostly pieces of them.

They've got the entire book of Isaiah on display over there though. It's word for word accurate with the Bible of today, which is pretty impressive, and kinda puts the foot in the mouth of the "everything is lost in translation" crowd.

the dead sea fragments? Yeah, it was a bit disappointing.


It was fascinating to see something ~2000 years old literature but there were only 6 texts on display. The portions used in the exhibit were all roughly the size of my palm and one of them consisted primary of the boarder edge of the paper. Had I known before hand im not sure that I would have found it so disappointing but the way it was advertised I had expected to see much larger sections of the scrolls and also more of them. The majority of the exhibit is dedicated to the scrolls discovery, who wrote the scrolls, and then artifacts from that era taken from the areas the scrolls were found. It concludes with a small display on the progression of the bible thru history and has some awesome ~13-17 bibles. Honestly, i thought that was the best part

Personally, I think they should have left those things in that cave. they were being preserved for all eternity just fine in there. Now I bet they are gone within a few hundred years.

nah. in fact, they're remarkably well kept in some amazing air-tight containers in dark rooms with special lights that show them... and they're only put out on occasion...


they found somewhere around 50,000 containers out there. They've opened up about 6,000. So, they'll be doing this for awhile now...

they've been split up and are now housed in a politically unstable country


one big war is all they need to destroy all the ancient treasures there- just look at all the stuff that has been destroyed in iraq

There are multiple traveling shows. Some only have a 8x11 size fragment, others have entire galleries of full pages. Either way they're amazing. I mean, it's just a piece of paper, but it's not every day you can see something this rare, or something that is entirely priceless.
