Doctors recommend it for sleep troubles. My doctor told me that I could take it on occasion when I was pregnant to help with restlessness since there isn't a lot of information out there on taking Ambien while preggers.

otc diphenhydramine is 25mg, tylenol pm has 37.5mg

i always just take 2 benadryl if i need to sleep, far safer than any rx sleep med, plus i save my liver the acetaminophen.

also, if you have allergy troubles, zyrtec is over-the-counter these days and far less drowsy.
