Mountaineers coach Moore wants to play Tar Heels

Appalachian State has played North Carolina in football only once - in 1940.

Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore is trying to end the drought.

Moore acknowledged Wednesday that he's tried to get the Tar Heels on their schedule. So far, North Carolina has balked.

Moore said he's puzzled why the Tar Heels scheduled McNeese State for their season opener instead of the Mountaineers. He said a matchup with North Carolina would be a "great football game" and "good for the state."

____________________ ________________________________ ______________

Id enjoy seeing the Tarheels in the Butch Davis Era get embarrassed in Chapel Hill by the Mountaineers, but I guess Dick Baddour is too chicken shit!

But playing the three-time defending Football Championship Subdivision champions would be risky for the Tar Heels. Appalachian State stunned then fifth-ranked Michigan last season.

Appalachian State lost to North Carolina State 23-10 in 2006.

One spectacular upset does not a great team make.

Plus Michigan losing to them had more to do with a lack of team speed on Michigan's part than anything else.

App. State won the title the year we beat them as well, so it's kind of hard to say they've gotten a lot better since that season. And if that's the case, then that would mean you were suggesting we've gotten worse under TOB than we were under Amato. Is that what you really think?

^^ exactly, granted a win is a win, but the big ten is not known for speed, and if you don't come with a purpose and hit a speed team in the mouth, you're going to get burned. It was definitely a downplaying by michigan more than a outplaying by app state.

I never really bought this "they lack team speed" theory about the App St. upset, Michigan beat Florida in the Capital One Bowl later in the season and no one is going to argue that Florida doesn't have team speed...it just seems more likely that Michigan was overconfident and didn't prepare as well as they should have.

Also last year we easily trounced Wofford a team that beat App State last year, and that was during the stretch of time when we weren't playing very well.

I bet UNC will play them in a year or two, when they're a little more confident in their prospects and know that they're good enough to beat them.

UNC can't afford to screw a possible 7-8 win season by losing to asu in the first game and not being able to fill up half the stadium until basketball games start being played on Saturday lol.

i mean its high risk, low reward

alot of matchups dont happen every year because of this, from many big name and md tier programs

Who cares?

They should be. They have nothing to gain by playing them and everything to lose...

In fact, people got pissed off that we played @ ECU in bball for the same reason. We had nothing to gain by it and everything to lose.

Though, in reality, any ACC basketball team should win against ECU no matter where they play...

And with that I will now prove to you why NC State should have played for the National Championship.

NC State beat Wofford.
Wofford beat App State.
App State beat Michigan.
Michigan beat Florida.
Florida narrowly lost on the road to eventual champion LSU.

Therefore, logic reasons that NC State is LSU's equal and on a neutral field should have gotten a shot to play them.

exactly...theres no reason for D1-A teams to want to play App...they win, good they're supposed to...they lose? well people are still talking shit about Michigan last year...if App truly wants respect, step up to 1-A...if not, know your place

^^hey look theres one common opponent there...Wofford...we beat them, App lost...talk about Florida when we both play the same Florida team in the same season

Edwards became QB for App about 1.5 games after we played them. Although, their QB puked it was so hot and loud down in the SEZ on the goal line. Edwards did get snaps that game IIRC. Didn't work out too well for them.

Please explain your analogy further.

I thought it was perfectly reasonable and logical to conclude that NC State would have given LSU as good a game as Florida did because they beat Wofford. Is it not?

Edwards was not their starting QB in the game they played against us. He's been their key to victory.

I agree that UNC will probably agree to play them in a good 4 years or so after Butch has had a chance to do his thing.

I wouldnt want to play them at this point either

I figured by

http://www.thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=535729&page=1#11875790

this post, no one would be legitimately trying to argue with me still... I guess some people have such a hard on to argue that they still try to get the upper hand.

And us beating Wofford has no real bearing on what might have happened had we played App State. Common opponents might be OK to look at as PART of breaking down a potential matchup but there are so many other variables that it really has no value by itself...

all i was saying was that common opponents and how you fared against them was relevant when comparing two teams, when obviously we all agree the transitive thing isnt

also I think UNC should play them...teams are becoming aware of App after the Michigan game, so 1-A teams are more hesitant to schedule them, but a local team should schedule them...and we played them just a couple years ago

woah woah, clearly nym wasn't serious.

what i meant was that it's relatively legit to say "we beat wofford, handily, who beat app state and that demonstrates the difference between div 1 and div 1aa", while his farse of an example that he was using to debunk wofford/asu wasn't the same.

But it's not really a legitimate argument. Things like this happen every day. One team plays lights out against someone. That same team plays awful against the next.

Frankly, I think common opponents in and of themselves have about the same legitimacy as my loony transitive argument.

Hey Florida and App State have a common opponent too. What can we draw from that?

my point is its a direct comparison based on games that were actually played, which is infinitely more relevant than transitive guessing...even though I think Florida was a better team than App last year, you can definitively say that App beat Michigan, Florida lost to Michigan...we agree you can't say "therefore App would beat Florida" but it just seemed to me like you were saying comparing common opponents was as useless as using the transitive property

Quote :

well i disagree...cause like i said, common opponents are based on real games versus the same teams...not fake games

I don't think any .500 team should risk playing an App, it just doesn't make sense. The Michigan game was a complete and utter farse, and poor App might have won a Pyrrhic victory. They aren't going to get mid level teams to schedule them, and I doubt we ever see it again in our lifetime that a top 5 team (well, Michigan was overrated for the first half of the year) will lose to a 1aa school.

I expect LSU to completely and utterly threash App this year, to make a point. I hope they blank them and put up 50+, just to get all the App bandwagon to shut the hell up.

really, the point is that wofford was a good 1aa team last year, and we were a bad 1a team last year, and they looked really bad against us.

so did app state in 2006, when they were defending nat'l champs.

Their defense was good that year.

Their two star players were the defensive linemen, they were both seniors. If you watched the championship game those guys pretty much won it themselves (including scoring the winning points IIRC).

This year their defense was terrible, and all the games they lost or almost lost were because 1) Edwards was hurt, or 2) they got into a shootout and the other team's D held, while theirs didn't.
