^^ 4 out of 5 reasons why Obama is a man of the people
(1) thats a $500 bike (2) no bike shoes or spandex shorts (3) is he riding tandem w/ one of his daughters behind him? (4) i think his rear tire is low on air. (5) SS agent in the car to his left.

my god, yes, we have.
look around you, when youre not on a base, at all the fatbodies .... everywhere. You want to see the typical fatass americans? go to any Wal-Mart. its like their natural habitat.
the more i ride my bike and watch what i eat, the more i see a bunch of fatasses everywhere around me. especially where I work on the Eastside suburbs. Seattle proper, people are generally in decent shape.
all sorts of things are even being reengineered for "american ass sizes"

for a 5'11" 25-y.o. male, the medically recommended weight is between 135-175 pounds. that puts a person in the 19-25 range of BMI, which is considered healthy.
so moron is healthy, and ShinAntonio is on his way to becoming a fatbody by the time he hits his 30's and his metabolism slows down.

except as, I said, I have a decent amount of muscle mass. BMI's been shown to be irrelevant when in that situation. My body fat percentage has been measured at 14.6% which is pretty good by medical standards. But nice try. 8/1/2008 2:06:51 PM |

That's technically on the low side of the 'normal' BMI range. But even with just this mass, someone could feasibly have a large body fat content. This shouldn't be, and isn't, skinny by any means.
Someone who is 6 foot-ish and 180+ pounds is either hitting the gym everyday like it's their job, or packing some serious pork. The unhealthy kind. The fact is, most of us are not particularly physically active, though there are plenty of exceptions. But the application of the typical American diet to a fairly non-active lifestyle was never medically appropriate. It is patently unhealthy.
I'm guessing that Obama would be in like the top 0.5% of physical fitness in America. Maybe better than that. But this is not going to hurt him. Why? How fat are newscasters on average? politicians? corporate leaders? Public figures are vastly disproportionately skinnier than the average person. Americans may be fat, but that doesn't mean they are proud of that fact.8/1/2008 2:17:23 PM |
joe_schmoe All American 18758 Posts user info edit post |
its true. successful people tend to be physically fit or at least in good shape.
poor folks and losers tend to be fat slobs.
there's always exceptions, but this is the trend of modern society. 8/1/2008 2:26:50 PM |

in most every country besides america, it is borderline "fatass".
unless you're some kind of bodybuilder, thats pushing the BMI. fatty deposits around your organs lead to all sorts of health problems. 8/1/2008 3:09:57 PM |
mrfrog ☯ 15145 Posts user info edit post |
weight inflation... a pound of fat just isn't worth what it used to be.
^ you don't have to be a body builder, you just have to work out a LOT. There are all kinds of flavors of body building and exercising anyway. If you plan on looking like a football lineman, then you'll pound down the protein shakes and weight gainers and put on weight quick. What it is you gain is disputable.
There's also healthy and not healthy fat. Belly fat has been shown to be unhealthy. In just about all cases and quantities. Just because you're not bulging doesn't mean you wouldn't have fewer health risks 10 lbs lighter and without the belly.
In order to have the lowest health risk possible, you would... need to look like Obama.

is that just because you have some 3rd world countries where the norm is completely emaciated and on the verge of dying of starvation? maybe i'm off, but i seem to remember when i was a kid, "6 foot, 180 lbs" seemed like the typical dimensions of an "average man"]8/1/2008 3:22:54 PM |

^I agree....seems like alot of people have a skewed view of health (i.e. skinny = healthy, which is not necessarily the case).

Quote : | "Just because someone is lean doesn’t make them immune to diabetes or other risk factors for heart disease,” said Dr. Louis Teichholz, chief of cardiology at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, who was not involved in Bell’s research.
Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores — a standard obesity measure that divides your weight by the square of your height — can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside.
Of the women scanned by Bell and his colleagues, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had excessive levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent." |
the BMI is very misleading in alot of cases...granted there are alot of fat slobs out there, but going solely by height/weight or BMI doesn't give anywhere near a complete picture of one's overall health.8/1/2008 3:32:48 PM |
theDuke866 All American 52839 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, BMI isn't the end-all (for example, I'm 5'8" and 185 lbs, and am not fat)...but if you don't do some significant working out, BMI is probably a pretty good reference (i.e., for the vast majority of the population, it's gives a pretty decent estimate. i'd wager there are more people who go and play around in the gym once and a while and think they're ok despite their BMI than there are people who legitimately aren't accurately represented by their BMI). 8/1/2008 5:12:45 PM |

i think you guys are missing the real point here - it's not that Obama may r may not be too skinny.... it's that the Wall Street Journal wrote a fucking article about it. And where did the intrepid reporter who thought this was such important breaking news get some of her opinion and quotes from? A Yahoo Message Board thread that she started herself, asking just that question. http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/10322.html jesus f'ing christ. should we put this in one of the many threads about how the media sucks Obama's dick? 8/1/2008 10:43:01 PM |
