At least on Saturday I'm not going to be torn between which stage I need to be at.

How far apart are the stages and tent?

ha...I'm off the crutches and walking like a normal person now.

I'm worried about that stp/bob dylan/moby situation going on sunday.

bonnaroo (used to be) > all other festivals

Now it's over-commercialized & overpopulated. Metallica & Kanye? Seriously?

I really want to go to Langerado next year, the best lineup IMO....depends on your style of music I guess

sorry to derail the thread, but shit like this pisses me off. were you even there this year dude? the corporate sponsored tents are harmless. oh no you can get your hair washed and get free packs of american spirits. this is ruining bonnaroo! what the hell? there's an arcade and a batting cage sponsored by MLB? you mean there's even more shit i can do now? this is unacceptable!

overpopulated? yeah ok, considering it didn't sell out this year. and i already know your response to this, so spare me.

i'll give you kanye. he never belonged in the first place, and the whole thing ended up being a disaster as i'm sure you've heard. but everyone i know who was hesitant about watching metallica said they had a good set and were really enthusiastic about being there. yet somehow i guess that contradicts the whole bonnaroo vibe. you know, the whole thing about people coming together to watch music and have a good time. and kirk hammett showed up randomly to play a song during my morning jacket's epic 4 hour set in the rain, and it was awesome.

if anything bonnaroo is guilty of becoming over-diversified. i guess it's unacceptable that virtually every type of music other than jam bands is represented now, which in turn attracts fans of those styles, which then brings more people from different walks of life together for 4 days to enjoy each other's company and have a good time. there were a few minor bumps in the road this year with kanye, but i'm sure ac and superfly have learned from that mistake and will put on the best festival of the summer again next year.

langerado has the best lineup? beastie boys? 311? seriously?

also my friend had got a condom from one of the guys from foo fighters at the virgin music festival this year

To the topic at hand, I'd love to make it to the Virgin Mobile festival....it's just not in the cards for me this year...

^Listen Rat Shit, maybe if you had got to go to the first one, you'd feel differently about this. In case you can't read either, I said Langerado had the best lineup in my opinion, DEPENDING ON YOUR TASTE IN MUSIC. I like the earlier banaroo lineups, and I like the fact that it used to be be about the music, not just a corporate cash cow. Yes, I tend to listen to more jam bands than Metallica and Death Cab for Cutie

Beastie Boys - not really a fan
311 is a badass band, and there were a plethora of other good bands that came out for Langerado. No need to get your panties in a bunch over difference in opinion. I'm not hating on Banaroo for diversifying itself to increase ticket sales; it's just not my cup of tea. I go to a festival for the music. If I want constant games and activities, I can got a fucking amusement park or my local Putt Putt.

*Srry WillemJoel for my incidental part in the hijacking of this thread. Have fun in Baddymore

I guess the thread already got derailed so ... sorry.

I thought Bonnaroo was the least corporate HUGE EVENT I've ever been to.

Certainly than any other big concert at an endorsed arena or amphitheater, and certainly x5 more than any sporting event. The stages weren't named, and there weren't banners and shit all over the place.

My coworker who went to Coachella said everything was the SPRITE DJ Tent or the AT&T Main Stage or etc.

Metallica at Bonnaroo was great. It isn't like it was the first year they tried to mix it up (Tool, Radiohead ... there's always been diversity). Plus, Bonnaroo, unlike Virgin or Coachella or Lollapalooza or ACL ... lets shows go LATE. Like 5 am late.

-----------------------------------

^yeah, have a great time at this thing, guys. sorry

ok so bonnaroo is now this big 9 headed shit belching corporate hell demon raining flaming fecal death matter on the festival scene, and you'd love to go to a festival named after a corporation? didn't they have a stage sponsored by pepsi or something? you know kanye was on the bill there too right?

look man, i know everyone has different taste in music and all that. hell i listen to some jam bands too. but people who run around saying the things you say about bonnaroo now just make me mad. all those bands that were there in 2002 when it started? they're still coming back every year. check the lineups from 07 and 08 and compare them with 02. they're just also being accompanied by a lot of other talented groups. i;ve been twice, but i ran into some people this year who have been every year and they all said 2008 was the best. and that's even with metallica and all the corporate shit that isn't being shoved in your face everywhere.

^^^i guess that might make it a bit of a challenge then

my buddy mentioned it a few weeks back, and I ruled it out at that point b/c I'm going to a few shows over the next couple weeks and need to ration the $$$

Any feedback from those that went?

^I wasn't trying to make Banaroo out to be the shithole of all festivals; obviously they have a ton of good bands that continue to play on a yearly basis....I'm just more of a fan of the 'small' festivals; the diversification into mainstream music brings in a whole different crowd than where it all started in 2002. With changing music, there will always be a changing crowd, and the laid back environment is one of the things I look for in a festival. (maybe I'm just being too much of a hippie)

Bonnaroo was incredibly laid back. Just because metallica is there doesn't mean there will be murdering.

In fact, the metallica fans were more chill than many other people I saw.

Wasn't pointing the finger at Metallica, was just saying that the crowd has changed along with the music since 2002. I listen to a fair amount of heavier rock; it's just not what I look for in a festival.

Did you prefer Banaroo over Langerado b/c of the bands that were on each bill, or was it more to do with the overall environment / festival experience?

(^^^Kanye was not at Langerado btw)

It was a number of things really

I just found myself going back to the campsite a lot at langerado, at bonnaroo I entered Centeroo when the first band started and didn't leave until like 3 or 4AM each night. There was ALWAYS a really interesting band playing, it wasn't really the case at langerado. to me anyway.

^Fair enough

^^A festival is not a 'festival' if it's not a multi-day event with on site camping in my book. There were several good bands playing in Baltimore that would have made it worth attending. Honestly, I didn't even know Kanye was going to be there, bit it's one thing to watch a show with a bunch of Kanye fans. It'd be a little different camping alongside them for 3 days....and yes I realize it wasn't a bunch of "kanye fans" at banaroo but I think Virgin Mobile Fest and Banaroo are apples and oranges.

I had a feeling that'd it come up; that's why i said "in my book". Of course it's a festival, but it's a bit different to camp alongside someone for 3 days than just bump shoulders at a concert.....you know how much shit would've probably been stolen / broken if the rowdy ass Lollapalooza crowd were unleashed on a "hippie festival" campground? My point is just that they are two completely different scenes.

I get what you're saying.

I've never been to one without camping and I probably won't.

except maybe Ultrafest, but that's because I live a ten minute metro-rail ride away from it.

corporate or not...i just like live music. I enjoyed the hell out of the first year of Bonnaroo and I enjoyed the hell out of the last 2 years of Lollapalooza. Festivals have evolved...just like musical tastes do(they just don't always evolve the same).

^ I really wanted to see chromeo but couldn't get my friends up early enough to get there in time.

bloc party - decent but a little disappointing
the offspring - fucking rocked ...ended up wedged between 3 different mosh pits. not exactly where i wanted to be but the price to pay for being up front http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cnn2NvU-Oqg
ferry corsten - rocked
chuck berry - looked every bit his age and still rocked
wilco - only saw one song
underworld - the 5 minutes i saw was pretty good
foo fighters - awesome...the songs all were extended versions of their normal live versions http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=glMj398ZFEw
jack johnson - saw his last song..eh

Andrew Bird - pretty damn good..nice stage setup....actually bumped into him at the concession stand later in the day
paramore/taking back sunday - avoided
Rabbit in the Moon - insane...between the singer rolling around on top of the crowd in a hamster ball and him taking a power tool to a metal mask he was wearing ..def one of the most entertaining things i saw all weekend http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3V5zlAwbOIQ
deadmau5 - decent
lil wayne - might have been good ...but i saw more of his boys running around on the stage waiting for him to get there then of him...left after his first song for the other stage
iggy and the stooges - 70 year old shirtless man pouring 2 dozen bottles of water on himself while running back and forth through the middle of the crowd
stp - started 30 min late and ended early...but very good for the little bit they played
bob dylan - saw about 2 minutes
moby - rocked
armin van buurin - saw maybe 3 min
nin - crazy visuals, great performance, really good show http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=x1gTYHbEGx4
kanye - thank god waited until nin was done before playing his better songs....great performance for what i saw

The youtube clips are just some of the crappy ones i shot.
