So I just moved into a house on Aug 1st. The people before were out on the 31st. The place still has power and cable. That I like, since it is free. But internet does not work in the house and there are no unsecured wireless networks around.

TWC says they can not do anything until the old account runs out. Sounds like bullshit to me. I have a cable modem. So is it just the third part software that is preventing me from connecting?

careful - they can black list you for fiddling with their router firmware - they send their internet signal to the router's IP as far as I know, and your router isn't the one that is sposed to be receiving it...i would wait and just watch tv if i were you.

you can turn the old equipment in and the contact info for the old tenants anmd get it switched over to you

or you can totally fuck them over and not turn in the equipment and theyll have to pay hundreds of dollars in late fees

make their asses come back and get their shit and cancel their service, its not your problem

and just steal wifi in the mean time

[Edited on August 2, 2008 at 1:04 PM. Reason : nvm i dono what u can do bout the net, but make the fucks that didnt cancel their service pay]

^two things - he didn't say they left their equipment there, and he said he couldn't get wifi.
try again.

how do they still have cable

i dont understand how they have to wait til service runs out\

i had a similar scenario (or so i thought) but i was nice enough to return their equipment for them so TWC could cancel their sevice, and they did on the spot all they needed was contact info in the serials on the equipment

we have our own cable box from before. but plugging the tv straight into the coax connection gets cable as well. I didn't know they monitor that close XSMP, good call.

also, they did not leave their old cable box/modem behind. they people were dicks who moved out before. pretty much just left behind everything they didn't want.

lol it would have been more of a dick move to leave it behind because that would make it difficult to get your own installations

no prob - enjoy your free cable all you want tho - they can't tell what you're doing with that, because the cable box receives but only transmits when you want to buy something. as far as teh wifi goes, try making an antenna out of a pringles can - there are plenty of tutorials for significantly increasing your wifi reception online.

if you do find a cable box laying around, it has (most likely) an 80gb hdd in it!
