don't rub it down, just soak in a foot pan, or something like a hugh tupperware bowl or something. maybe get a shoebox and line it with a trash bag and that will suffice.

one thing that worked for me is to cut a V in the middle of my toenail. This promotes the nail to grow outward instead of down into the skin. I've had problems with my toes for years. 8/3/2008 1:25:33 PM |

oh christ they're terrible
just soak it in super hot water like people have said, with epsom salts
if you go to a doctor, they're gonna want to put some shit on there to kill the nail, and all that associated horseshit, but it's really not necessary if you take care of this one in time and make sure to let it grow properly from now on.
when you're soaking it, you're gonna have to kind of pry it up out of the skin it's digging into (this will hurt like a motherfucker and you WILL bleed) and try to trim off the part that's digging into the skin. Once you get it out, you will immediately notice a lessening of pain, and the swelling will obviously stop. Once you have it trimmed, it will take a few days for the area to heal back up, so you may want to put some antibiotic stuff on the edge where it was ingrown so it doesnt get infected. 8/3/2008 2:33:31 PM |

it's probably already infected and that's why it is red nasty and hurting
also what kind of toenails do you have? if they naturaly curl under on the edges ya need to get that mess taken care of permanately. 8/3/2008 3:32:11 PM |

Yup, this is exactly right. I pried a piece of plastic under the hangnail part and let the toe dry back out before I trimmed it. Didn't really hurt THAT much, I'd put the pain at a 4-5/10 for a few minutes to dig the nail out to be able to cut it.8/3/2008 3:57:47 PM |

the digging out pain isnt that bad. the fucking worse pain is when you have an ingrown toenail and you drop something on it or hit something with it. that is ridiculous 8/3/2008 3:59:58 PM |

i've had two ingrown toenails cut out because they both happened in basketball season and i couldn't tolerate the pain or fix it myself. they give you a few numbing shots, take a razor and slice your nail all the way down a few millimeters from the side that is hurting you and just pull it out. it heals fast and you won't be in pain any more.
all the home remedies have been mentioned, but try to pry it out after soaking your toe and then trim the edges so it isn't pushing any more. also, cut the V in the middle and it won't grow back and cause you pain.
my big toenails are both cracked right now thanks to tight cleats, an all day softball tournament, and 100 degree weather at the time...they don't hurt now though...ingrown toenails suck so try to follow the things in this thread and make it better. 8/3/2008 4:23:02 PM |

Additional instructions:
- it will help to squish up the paper and compress it as much as possible before trying to wedge it under your nail. Tonight, I rolled mine. - lay said pressed paper against nail and as under it as you can - at no point should you feel any pain beyond the aching of the inflammation (i.e, if pushing paper up under your nail hurts, you're doing it wrong) - I used a bobbypin, with the coating stripped off. Lay the end so it's both on the paper and the edge of your nail, but just barely. Pull it off the edge of your nail slightly, and then dip under edge of the nail, and then start pushing in. I wish I could describe it better. You're doing a tucking action with this, and then pushing in.
I started the day in sneakers I don't usually wear, and then wore tight heels. Oouch. 10/29/2008 10:26:58 PM |

I just let my nail grow out, cut it until I reach the crevice then pull sideways il I know I'm at the nails end (you'll feel it) then pull the bitch out. I usually get a huge chunk and yeah it hurts like a bitch but it lasts two seconds instead of every damn day. You'll have to repeat this until you get new shoes or allow the skin to settle. 10/29/2008 10:29:52 PM |

^^^I had something like that happen last year...also on my thumb It was just random pus pocket. It didn't ache constantly, but I never realized how handy hands are until it hurts to use them
I went to student health and they said to come back in two days, and they lanced it when I came back. It was SO COOL! For once, my body shot out a creamy liquid at a respectable velocity.
...I wish I had a penis.

also when you cut your nail, cut it shorter in the middle of the toe (a doc told me, to encourage growth towards the middle?) 10/29/2008 10:31:13 PM |

mine wasnt really an ingrown toenail though
it was just some bacteria got in some cut and started actin up same with my thumb 10/29/2008 10:32:11 PM |
ambrosia1231 eeeeeeeeeevil 76471 Posts user info edit post |
^^^^^Why would people let things get that bad??
^^^^Nah...less resistance in the middle that way. When your toenail starts having trouble growing elsewhere, it'll have an easier time compressing the area with less nail than it would growing against the skin.
My not-very-well-worded explanation

YES!! if you cut a small V shape in the middle then the nail will try to close the gap and pull inwards (toward the V) from the sides
or something like that.10/29/2008 10:33:26 PM |

If you can catch it early enough: cut, grab and pull fast. Kiwi is right, it will hurt like hell for a few seconds, but man up and do it. If I could deal with it when I was like 12 you can deal with it at 23. 10/29/2008 10:33:59 PM |

and then we wind up cryign like little bitches day after fuckin day and it gets to the point where our female friends get sick of it and have to pop it for us while we continue to cry and gnash our teeth in pain and they laugh and shit
in the end its not very manly, get it taken care of early and keep your pride intact

Do this definitely.
Definitely do NOT do what I did, which is wait until it is super infected, then go to your family doctor, who gives you an innefective local anesthetic and rips it out with pliers.
Not only was it by far the worst pain I have ever felt (including breaking my ankle, tearing my ACL, and burning off some of the skin on my hand with a firework), but it also grew back just as bad. Went to the podiatrist, and it's been 6 years with no problems.10/29/2008 10:36:15 PM |
