zorthage was going around a curve 45-45 (speed limit is 45), and lost control of the car.

We, very literally, walked away from that on our own.

He has some soreness in his neck, and single bump on his head. I got tossed around more, and have some really pretty bruises (mostly from the seat belt), but I'm okay, too.

That car rolled at least three times - I remember three rolls, and a witness says five rolls.

I <3 seat belts (I did like the webbing beforehand, from a tactile and a design standpoint)

zorthage no longer wants a convertible I wonder why

haha, yeah it's hard to envision a single barrel roll from 45 (on level ground), much less more

He says he was, and I believe it. I drive like a bat out of hell, and I won't take that curve at 45, in my ford escort.

The cop insists he was going 60, and he seemed adamant in getting Matt to fess up to being impaired somehow. He also says his right tires left the road before either of us remember anything going wrong. I'm gonna try my damndest to get out there today and take pictures of any tire tread there in the dirt.

In talking to zorthage's mother, who lives down that way (this is where the wreck was), and she mentioned how the road has seemed incredibly slick to her since they resurfaced it recently. I'm going to look into that. I don't know how one goes to the DOT and says 'so, this new road surface...how's it compare to the old one?'

I know

I won't yell DIE IN A FUCKING FIRE at another driver again At least, I hope not.
I'm not gonna lie...I fuss at him for his driving. He goes too slow, keeps his foot on the gas too long when stops are up ahead, accelerates too hard from a dead stop, uses the left lane for cruising, and sometimes doesn't use his blinkers. Most of that pertains to how much unnecessary wear he puts on his car, but at least for the PT, that's now a non-issue

^^That's fine. Any reasonable person would. But I am completely serious that I believe him when he says he was going 45-50. He's a conscientious driver, and doesn't speed hardly at all. Plus, that curve is at the top of the hill, so it's not a case where his speed could have gotten faster than he'd notice in just a few moments.

I mean, we're gonna fight the citation, but if he loses, he loses. He knows his speed, and I trust him. His wallet cares what happens, and he knows there's only so much you can do, and the law might place all blame for this squarely on him, but
1) we're both okay
2) we both know he did nothing wrong here

That's good enough for me.

new road surface should be tackier than the old by a good margin (better grip)

i still dunno how you could roll so many times going only 45.... but a pt might be more rounded than most other cars (or squared, height and width about the same?)

I believe so much damage coming from doing the speed limit.
Y'all know what happened to Lucky1 back in June and he was doing 35 on Lake Wheeler.

I'm glad y'all are ok.

Oh, it so wasn't. This stuff was nice smooth blacktop-like, and the old stuff was old-school asphalt? [the grey road material], with lots of pits and crevices between the [what do you call the rocks and pebbles and solids they mix in?]

2 things

1) i grew up living off old stage road, and i know exactly where that is. i know nothing about any recent work cause i havent been out there in a couple years or so... but that area in particular has always always always had wrecks. i've seen tons. in fact, my brother totalled one of my dad's vehicles out there when he was 16.

2) i wouldn't even waste my time with anything related to the DOT. you're not gonna get anywhere, trust me on this one.

glad you guys are ok, but just wanted to chime in and say that that particular curve/intersection there has been labeled a "death curve" for like 20+ years

I suspected as much. Glad to hear someone volunteering that info

I mean...like I said: I'm an aggressive driver in a lower car, and I won't take that curve at the speed limit.

more surface area = more grip

your tires are rubber, not smooth plastic. the grip comes from the size of the contact patch, not the abrasiveness of the road material. why do you think racing tires have no grooves at all? greater area of contact = more grip.

There are some sick curves on Old Stage Road, and if you run off the road you're fucked. There are potholes and deep shoulders everywhere, and I've blown at least 3 right side trailer tires on that road. People just don't realize how fast 45mph is. Of course, if he was speeding, stick with your story or they'll nail you to the fucking wall.

He was off the road before overcorrecting.

i can believe that he wasn't speeding

but that kind of car just isn't made for cornering, period

I was still trembling when we got to Rex.

I would say the adrenaline fully wore off around 6ish? I was still nauseous for a couple hours in the ER...mom vomited at the scene (I called her before EMS arrived, telling her what had happened, and to please take pictures [not for the internet, but because 1) I knew we wouldn't accurately remember the scene 2) Taking pictures is what we do in my family...most of us are into photography).

During the rolling, it was kind of like riding a fair ride, in that you're holding on for dear life, and being twirled around. It was very UNLIKE the fair, because you don't know a damn thing about safety, when it's going to stop, if you'll get out, or what's going on.

I wouldn't do it again, that's for damn sure, but I do kind of like like the adrenaline
