There is really no season for lobster at all in Maine. Except for bad days in the winter months, lobstermen are out there bringing them in. More tend to be caught in the summer months because the tourist demands are much higher. The best lobster is not dependant upon any particular month at all. Generally speaking, the better restaurants get the choice of the catch, provided they are willing to pay a little more to get the best. That is generally related to size and freshness. So how can you tell, you can't. You can ask if they are fresh, but that is no guarantee.

sometimes they're shipped from other places.

I want it pulled straight outa the ocean into a pot of boiling water.

when you ship those guys they get all stressed out and it fucks the meat up

but I guess im being picky.

if you eat at any of the higher end restaurants that are right on the water, you can pretty much guarantee you are getting good shit. a lot of them buy their lobsters that morning.

Yeah if you're not paying a lot, then the lobster you get is probably frozen. Sad, ain't it.

i find it hard to believe that you are such a lobster connoisseur that you can tell the difference but don't know what "lobster season" is in maine.

ha i dont eat lobster ever. I just like the idea of eating a lobster right out of the ocean. Those tanks are depressing.

There is kind of a season as far as the amount of meat that is in the lobster. When they molt they are mostly filled with water instead of packed with meat. Soft shell lobster are a ton cheaper than the hard shell lobsters that have a ton of meat.

I believe they are soft shell right now but Im not sure how long their molting "season" lasts and they get hard again

Just ask the restaurant or lobster seller if they are hard shell or soft shell

back in the day they used to make prisoners eat lobsters, since they were considered nasty bottom feeders.
