i've had this idea for a while , wondering if it would work. clubs bars etc. shut down at 2am . after that it's illegal to sell alcohol.Of course at 2 am bars stop making $ and they could care less what u do as long as u get out. what i propose is that the law requires any establishment with a liquor liscese to stay open for at least an hour after they stop serving alcohol.the bar/club could continue selling non alcoholic drinks and water. this gives people at least an hr to sober up find a ride whatever they need to do to sober up as well as more time to party . what u guys think? 8/12/2008 2:53:14 PM |

without giving it any thought I like it. I'm sure there are holes in the theory though. Personally, after a night out drinking before heading home I need some munchies to chow down on. Not only does that take care of being hungry, but helps ward off any potential hangovers. 8/12/2008 2:59:29 PM |

Terrible idea. Your body doesn't process much alcohol in one hour.
If someone needs a ride they can find a cab at 2. 8/12/2008 3:00:05 PM |

I think that this idea will give people a false sense of security. The body can only process so much alcohol in one hour. Id wager that a number of people would declare themselves sober enough to drive after that hour when they in fact arent. Besides, dont most bars already stay open until around 2:30? 8/12/2008 3:07:46 PM |

How about people take personal responsibility for their actions and stop drinking an hour early instead of the government harassing private business owners.
PS....how would you enforce your law.....
Police: Ohhh this bar is closing only 30 after 2am. Lets go make this place open back up so that everyone will have a place to sober up. Even if its 100% empty and everyone has left. 8/12/2008 3:10:50 PM |

^ Personal responsibility FTW.
If your law passed I would just go to the bar at last call and buy enough drinks to keep me happy until 3. 8/12/2008 3:13:46 PM |

the only way to stop drunk driving is...you don't want to hear it.
realisticly, public transportation needs to beef up and suburbs need to be put to rest. 8/12/2008 3:24:11 PM |

I would not enjoy paying $7 for a bottle of water at 2:30am. 8/12/2008 3:24:40 PM |

I think it'd make practically no difference whatsoever due to the alcohol processing thing Mr. Joshua mentioned. 8/12/2008 3:33:48 PM |

Whenever I drink heavily, which isn't very often at all, I usually feel much more drunk 30 min to an hour after I've finished drinking.
A better solution in my opinion is for harsher penalties for drunk drivers and drunk drivers who cause injuries. We let too many people off the hook, which only teaches people not to worry about drunk driving because they'll probably get away with it. 8/12/2008 3:42:09 PM |

1) bars don't wanna stay open later if they aren't earning $ from alcohol 2) it would encourage more drunk driving since people think they can rely on that 1 hour buffer to sober up 8/12/2008 4:34:00 PM |

Here's an idea to stop drunk driving:
If you get pulled over and blow above the legal limit you get your license revoked permanently for the rest of your life. 8/12/2008 4:43:50 PM |

Definitely hard to enforce, but the concept is good. Although I will agree that people would then think they're more sober than they really are. And that might make it cause MORE drunk driving accidents.
I'd rather have more designated driver companies... like those biker people on Glenwood. That, and have harsher laws. Just make it completely unacceptable to drive after drinking. Something really rough, because then people would be afraid to do it. Some still would, but most would fear it. Eh. I'd say for people to just not be stupid, but that's hard.

most bars usually do stay open at least half an hour. I have not been to many bars that straight up kick everyone out at 2 AM.8/12/2008 11:13:55 PM |

A joke:
A robot walks into a bar. The bartender says "We don't serve your kind here." The robot destroys the bartender.
End of joke. 8/13/2008 10:22:35 AM |
