"this was written in "The Public Pulse" (opinion) section of the sunday world-herald by a Nebraska man...

Going for the gold
Why does U.S. Olympic swimmer
Michael Phelps need all those gold
medals? Surely, two or three would be
enough to gain him a slew of product
endorsements, thus ensuring him a
lifetime of financial security.
Is Phelps just another greedy, self-
centered American, so focused on
personal excellence that he has lost
the capacity to feel compassion for
his fellow athletes from less wealthy
countries? After all, didn't they also
train hard?
But Phelps just won't quit. He
keeps competing as hard as he can,
thus depriving others of their fair
share of medals. Where is the justice
here?
Perhaps Congress should hold
hearings and pass a law compelling
Phelps to either stop crowding out the
competition or give up some of his
medals to less fortunate athletes,
whose sense of self-esteem surely
must be suffering in the wake of
Phelps' successes."

isn't the point of a competition to determine who is deserving of the medals?

It's a commentary on the typical democrat view that some people earn "too much" money, and it should be redistributed to those who earn less.

Pretty sure this article was written as a joke.

uhh

that's not the counter argument you're looking for, because the analogy is pretty much spot-on, except that you could argue that life is not a competition where we need winners and losers in the way that a sporting event is.

^^ I'm waiting for the explanation of where I'm wrong

because I have heard pretty much every one of those talking points straight from the mouths of leftists.

Like I said, the analogy fails in that life is not a competition in search of winners and losers in the same sense that the Olympics is (though in some ways, it is certainly just that). Other than that, it's pretty much on.

^^what exactly is it that you want to argue about, so I can narrow it down...funding social programs, a progressive tax structure, holding congressional hearings (btw Arlen Specter, a republican is the king of holding retarded congressional hearings, such as the one investigating spygate because he is an eagles fan), etc?

I think this is the perfect Republican view on global economics in that our country only does better when everyone else is down.

^^^ progressive tax structure is the best example, although funding social programs also falls into the scope of the argument (the two are related, anyway, of course)

so you're saying that the wealthy should pay a lower percentage of their income in taxes than the poor? If you are really concerned about fiscal responsibility then cutting defense spending should be your biggest priority, as our defense spending has been out of control since Reagan.

come on, dude...nobody advocates regressive taxation.

well, maybe a few people advocate practices that would effectively be regressive (for example, a pure national sales tax or pure flat tax with no exemption for the first "X" amount of income), but it's generally because they simply haven't thought the issue through carefully enough--not out of any actual desire for regressive taxation. that's ridiculous.

maybe we could cut defense spending some, but I'd be quicker to target Medicare, Social Security, unconstitutional government agencies, etc.
