I think we do this every year on TWW, but I haven't seen it yet. Post any advice for incoming freshmen here. I'll start:
Don't dress like you're going to a night club, you'll just look foolish, or be thought a whore. Drop any snotty attitude you may have had in high school. If you single out the dorks and start picking on them, no one will like you or respect you. Some people are paying their own money to be in class. Don't create disruptions. Budget your time wisely between socializing and school work. Too much of either will leave you with regrets. It's a huge campus full of widely different people, so don't worry about being "cool" or "fitting in". No one cares if you sit alone at lunch. Rush fraternities/sororities if that's your bag, but you needn't depend on them for a social life. If you want a girlfriend, the first week is your only chance. The rare singles get snapped up quick. Raleigh is a major city that extends far beyond Hillsborough Street, so go explore it. You might be able to get away with parking in Cameron Village and walking or taking the CAT bus to campus. Just don't park in the same area every day. Don't walk around campus late at night with fewer than 2 companions, especially in isolated or unlit areas. Like I said, it's a major city, with big-city crime. Don't give money to the bums, it only encourages them to hang around longer. Be mindful of the local "nuisance party" law. Nothing ruins a party like grandma across the street calling the fuzz. I'll post more if I think of more. 8/19/2008 2:00:45 PM |
