August 30 & 31

i was hoping it'd be the NEXT weekend, when i'd actually be IN TOWN. i wanted to go get a couple more pacman frogs.

i haven't been impressed with the last several years of shows (i hate all the poorly-kept wild caught animals), but i still feel compelled to go.

i need more frozen mice

that usually justifies the entrance fee for me...but i agree with you, it's depressing at times

I don't think I'm going to go this year. I really do not need any more animals.

I may go. I went earlier this year (I think it was this year), and it really sucked. But now that I have a hedgehog, I need to purchase mealworms and I'd like to check and see if theres anything new. I can't purchase anymore animals though, which is sad. Soon, I will be able to apply for a zoo permit.

I bought a ball python that was probably about 1 to 1.5 feet long from a vendor there a year ago that died a few months after I got it. It only ate one pinkie in the entire time I had it. A neighbor of mine who owned a bunch of snakes and was pretty knowledgeable about them tried everything he knew to get it to eat but it ended up dying a few days before we were going to force feed it. I think the snake was probably sick when I bought it, but there were no external signs to indicate this.

I'd like to get another one, but I don't want to end up in the same situation again. Does anyone know of a dealer that will be there that they recommend?

Some of the vendors there are only concerned about the $.
They could care less if the animal is healthy, eating, warm/cool enough or stressed out when it's sold. They do not care if the purchaser has any clue how to take care of such an animal. So many animals are bought on impulse without considering the housing, feeding and other requirements of it. It really gets to me as I'm an animal science teacher and spend all day teaching students proper animal husbandry. It really does need to be regulated somehow.

That being said there are plenty of excellent vendors there that take proper care of their animals while there and ask questions to ensure the animal goes to a responsible home.

I've purchased many reptiles from the expo in the past and have had good luck, only loosing 2 uromastyx (wildcaught and dehydrated).

i'm not using this as my personal classifieds (well, i am), but i figured i'd find people in here who actually care

if you want a better chance of your animals surviving, buy from the breeders at the shows, not the wholesalers. granted i used to most often buy thru a wholesaler for the great price, and only ever had 1 die shortly after purchase, and that was one i knew i bought sick but thought i could revive.

if i didnt have to worry about gopher tortoise eggs hatching beginning that particular weekend, i would be making it up there. i am finally getting into geckos again. needless to say, i will have someone scout for me.

my brother shared a booth with a dealer last year, Frank Shealy from VA, who had some baby spider ball pythons and other varieties, I'm pretty sure he will be there again this time around. He's good people. I don't remember what the name of his operation is though :/

I'm going to go... last time I went I bought a $10 hamster/gerbil cage and was home before I realized there was a tiny dwarf hamster hiding in it. That was surprising.

So true. I went a few years ago. Wanted to buy some geckos for under $25. The vendor was catering to a person who was making a $100+ purchase, and ignored my questions because he wasn't going to get as much money from me. Sorta annoyed me, but the animals turned out great. Never had any health problems for the time that I had them. I eventually sold them in classifieds here because I got caught with them in the dorm. (of course, I didn't "learn" my lesson, but after that, I learned how to keep my critters out of sight. )

I probably shouldn't go because I have enough animals, but I am interested in either frogs or a tarantula.

honestly...if anyone wants to place some frozen mouse orders (the real reason i ever go there, honestly), and then chip in a small amount to cover entrance, i'll pick up mice for whomever

So my students want me to get a frog... so now I'm considering a white's tree frog or a pacman.
I'm partial to the white's myself.

I've been wanting to get a hairless guinea pig for a while. I have a hairless hamster and he's the coolest & oddest looking thing ever.

i've officially told myself i'm not going now.

i'd walk out of there with probably 3+ frogs and at least a few tarantulas. i really want to get a lizard, but don't want to deal with the set up and space issue at the moment.

i shall pine away until the next show, or just keep getting my Ts the way i typically do.

I have never been to the show. I know that the bulk is reptiles, but do they carry avian supplies?

yeah but the price is outrageous for the birds there - i checked out quite a few in the spring and couldnt believe it - bird food $10/lb, looks like the shit that came from walmart

I'd like to rehome a leopard gecko. normal. large male. He's about 2 years old. Currently living in a 10 gal terranium with sand substrate, 2 log hideouts, fake plants, water bowl.
He used to be friendly but hasn't been handled that much in the past few months so he'd need a little socializing.

I'll consider any decent offers if you're interested.

jeez. these threads used to be about all the people going to them, now everyone talks about how they cant go anymore.

if it werent for the fact that i have to watch out for hatching wild gopher tortoises and rattlesnakes this weekend, i would be driving my ass 5 hours north to raleigh for the show.

seriously, though...i need someone to scout the leaftails for me.

I went, didn't stay too long for the fear of spending too much money - I ended up buying a sugar glider pair, which I was surprised to find considering I couldn't find them last year
