what are some foods that are cheap that would be even cheaper homemade?for example...say i like hotpockets(not cause taste, but cause of price)...anyone got a recipe for that...or anything else like that?i think i'm gonna invest in tuperware and start making like a big think of meaty soups so i can just bring that in...also, are breadmakers worth it? i eat really healthy/fiber-ish breads, so i always figured i wouldnt be able to make that kinda stuff

A homemade equivalent to a Hot Pocket would be like a calzone or stromboli if you're looking for recipes. And for things like bread, if you buy quality ingredients and factor in the time you would spend making them, you probably aren't saving too much.
8/20/2008 12:47:07 PM
nigga, if you can't even afford hot pockets (or, for that matter, if you enjoy eating them), you need to seriously re-evaluate your life.
8/20/2008 12:50:00 PM
seriously evan...you need to get off your fucking high horse...it is disgusting sometimes[Edited on August 20, 2008 at 12:51 PM. Reason : ps- fag]

8/20/2008 12:52:00 PM
yes i have...did you not see the time me and prufrock went at it in the lunch thread?? i definitely do not like hot pockets[Edited on August 20, 2008 at 12:53 PM. Reason : ^haaaaaaaaaahahahahhaha "better person"...yeah...ok...lol]
8/20/2008 12:53:07 PM
In all honesty, I don't think you are going to get much cheaper than the prepackaged stuff like that. A Hot Pocket is what, $1? And frozen burritos are 33 cents or something ... Even if you buy the crappy grade of stuff they put in those things, unless you buy the industrial tub of cheese sauce at Sam's and make six thousand of them, you probably won't save much.[Edited on August 20, 2008 at 12:55 PM. Reason : I don't know why I am taking this seriously]

buy some ground beef when its on sale. you can use that shit for a number of things. and/or freeze for later use.tacos, meatloaf, chili, burgers, (homemade) hamburger helper, in spaghetti sauce, etc...

Check out the library for books like Make a Mix, Better Than Homemade etc in the cookbook/food section, two books my mom used my whole lifetime.

The other day I made fish cakes with canned tuna and stale bread. There is a huge box of canned tuna here for free and the bread also comes for free. Just add eggs and flavor then fry it up.Anyone else have any tuna miracles?
8/20/2008 1:18:42 PM
you won't save anything if that is your goal you will end up spending more $ but you will be healthier for it.
8/20/2008 1:19:11 PM
^^I like to sprinkle a little tuna in my cereal for a little extra protein

Ramen noodles = cheap spaghetti
8/20/2008 1:23:31 PM
You can make your own saeurkraut at home. You should also probably get a small crockpot and cook big meals in it that you can freeze / take to work. Slow cook cheap meats and they are delicious.

I knew I had this bookmarked somewhere! http://www.recipegoldmine.com/mixes/mixes.html and when you need to sub an ingredient http://homecooking.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.switcheroo.com/ you'll need to stock up on the basics; Aldi's good for that, but I think they still only take cash - there's one in Fuquay on 401, worth the trip but check their hours, they use to close earlier than most stores. ^ WTF? What he does behind closed doors is worse than being so drunk you wreck IN A PARKING LOT?!I'd forcibly restrain you and shove a strap on up your butt if it helped prevent drunk driving.
8/20/2008 2:26:27 PM
haha i wasnt drunk you dumb bitch
8/20/2008 2:28:13 PM
damn lewoods is on a strap on frenzy. btttopic, there are plenty of threads about how to eat cheaply. If you want to recreate a hotpocket for less than one dollar you are gonna be hard pressed, unless you make more than a dozen at time. then you got to factor in your time.
