looking to get one.. trying to use it for recording of races so condition doesnt matter. ive found one that has a busted LCD screen.

its a sony 30GB one. anyone have experience with this? DCR-SR42

If you're talking about the internal HD ones, they're great. We have 2 of the JVC models with drives in them. Keep in mind though, they're the slowest drives known to man up in those things - like iPod slow. It's great to shoot up 3 batteries worth of footage, but it takes like 30 minutes to move that data back to your drive....

If you shoot a lot of short stuff, I'd recommend a flash based camera - that uses CF cards, without exception. Insert a SanDisk Ducati or Extreme III in the 2-4GB range and have at it. When reading get a nice PCIE or at least firewire memory reader and enjoy the speeeeeeeeed. I also have a CF reader that slips in the PCMCIA slot on the laptop (completely in, nothing hanging out/dongle). Great for looking at shots instead of huddling around the 2" screen on the camera.

We just got a Canon HG10 here at work. Stores to internal hard drive, records in HD, image stabilized 10x optical zoom, nice piece of equipment. True, dumping the video back to the computer isn't the fastest thing in the world, but the convenience of not having to deal with flash memory is worth it IMO.

^I'm a photographer, fast CF cards are plentiful, as is the equipment to get the data off them.

That's the one I'm checking out. Take out the microdrive and get some SanDisk up in there for better performance. It also takes SD, which to me is awesome. Record to CF first, SD as backup.
