^^ Dude, even if you HATE star trek, you at least have to admit that Voyager is worse than TNG, so that makes it at worst the 2nd worst show ever.
I'm not much for Star Trek myself, but I still enjoy watching TNG.

anybody who says they hate star trek has either not seen the show, or just has no taste.(or saw a next generation episode from the first or early second season.)

Or they watched most of Voyager. That show sucked ass. But at the time I was a stupid teenager, and I didn't really notice the stupidity that was that show.
The main thing that makes Trek bad is that the writing tends to be very lazy. Every time the major cast get into an inescapable situation, they techno-babble themselves out of harm's way. There's never any real suspense in the shows, because you know that everyone who matters will be perfectly fine at the end of the day, no matter how much shit they get into. It also has the unfortunate side-effect of generating a lot of bunk and retarded pseudo-science, but that's mostly due to there being no science advisers on the show (or competent ones who are listened to, anyway).
But hell, I suppose that's become the signature of Trek. Take that away and it's not really Trek anymore.8/23/2008 3:45:31 AM |

But you're the one who mis-callibrated the sub-tachyon flux capacitor with anti-neutrinos, thus making it useless for measuring chrono-magnetic pulses and anaphasic frequencies. 8/23/2008 3:50:23 AM |

please. the excess of of anti-neutrinos was to offset the subspace sonic phase to differentiate the chrono-magnetic pulses. to filter the noise from the anaphasic frequencies, you're gonna have to configure the dionic atylic converter to compensate for the warp signature diluting the photonic field.

That show still suffered the problems I listed, but it was among the best of all the Treks.
The only thing keeping me from fully agreeing with you was that Voyager and Enterprise occurred after Roddenberry's death, yet they both sucked tremendously. 8/23/2008 10:48:07 AM |
Aficionado Suspended 22518 Posts user info edit post |
well the enterprise debacle occurred with producers that had claimed never to have seen any star trek show...i dont think that you can even count that one
voyager suffered the tng fate with a less likable captain that had horrible character development and the producers freely admit that they wanted it to have more technobabble than tng
really, voyager suffered from the pussification of the borg from tng
that would have been a good analogue to ds9 and the dominion and could have been even darker

DS9 was by FAR the best. Excellent show. TNG set the standard for the 'new' trek shows, but had a shaky first season and a half. TOS set the standard period. Cheesy and inconsistent, but still fun to watch. VOY really ramped up the unbelievable shit pretty much every episode, had poor char development, etc ENT was HORRIBLE except for a few fun episodes in the very beginning and very end.

the show takes place three or four hundred years in to the future, what the hell do you think someone in the medieval period of europe would think when you described a computer chip or an automobile to them, and technology would naturally solve a lot more problems than it would today, give them a fucking break, at least they approach it with a scientific attitude
Quote : | "i concur, DS9 is the crown jewel" |
whenever they do an annoying ass ferangi episode I get kind of turned off that from show
on voyager, it was def a failed series and that pisses me off because I thought it had the most potential of any star trek, but instead the writers pussed out and rehased tng when the ship was supposed to be struggling on a journey in the delta quadrant, still it had its high moments, I thought seasons four and two were actually pretty damn good

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Or is this your justification for why the writers make up the science as they go? Suspension of disbelief for certain technologies is a given (eg ftl travel) because current physics dictates they're impossible, so of course there will be some made-up science in that regard. But for everything else, the physics and the explanations should be consistent and believable.
But that's not even my main complaint. My main complaint is that this kind of writing is lazy. Everytime the main characters encounter a problem, they just make up a bunch of science-sounding jibberish and wish their problems away. How the hell can they truly face any problems when they can just pull a solution out their ass on demand? That's one of the marks of a piss-poor writer imo.
Quote : | "and technology would naturally solve a lot more problems than it would today, give them a fucking break, at least they approach it with a scientific attitude" |
When the fuck has ANYBODY in trek approached anything using the scientific method? Here's the scientific method:
1) form hypothesis 2) make observations or run controlled experiment 3) analyze data, determine if it matches your hypothesis 4) form or refine a model with which to make predictions 5) start back at step 2
Here's what they do in trek:
1) run into problem 2) throw technobabble back and forth to describe the problem and waste screen time 3) throw out some more technobabble that magically solves the problem the first time with little or no unintended side effects 4) do said technobabble solution without having actually tested it
Nearly every single solution that Trek comes up with is contrived and jerry-rigged in this exact manner. I wouldn't care if they did it now and again, but like I said they do this ALL THE GODDAMN TIME. It's intellectually lazy (on the part of the writers), it produces nothing of value story-telling wise, and it's insulting to the intelligence of the audience.8/23/2008 3:22:22 PM |

I'd also say that DS9 and TNG are the top two best of all of the treks. The original was quirky, but then again you have to put yourself in their time of production, then it's fun.
I liked Voyager but after the first few seasons, I stopped actively watching it back then, but have seen all the eps. I too mainly watched it for 7 of 9. I didn't like the fact that they based an entire trek show on a small and worthless ship, sure it was "advance", but I'd rather watch an entire series about the Defiant kicking ass. At least that motherfucker had cloak!
Never got into the original Enterprise, seemed like a cool idea to show the history of how it all started, but I think they poorly executed the whole show. Just seemed stupid that the aliens were afraid of earth and their whole of 1 ship armada...
