whats the noticeable difference between the regular milk that goes bad in about a week compared to the type that is "ultra-pasteurized" that lasts like a month

the latter comes in a carton

I taste no difference, but I no longer care for the taste of whole milk either after switching to skim. The first time I drank ultra pasteurized i was real worried because it was over a month old, but it tasted just like fresh 1 or 2% milk should.

it's the same milk it's just processed differently, perhaps with higher temperatures and in a different environment so that bacteria aren't as prevalent.

someone with more knowledge on the subject will chime in soon.

Ultra-pasteurized is what McDonald's has, and it is delicious.

Regular fresh milk is pasteurized. That entails heating milk to about 70 C for 15-20 seconds. Such milk will last for upto a week or so.

UHT milk (ultra heat treated, or ultra high temperature), or long life milk as it is commecially known, is heated to about 140 C for 1-2 seconds. Such milk has a shelf life of several months (doesn't need refrigeration). Once opened, it can last at least a couple of weeks.

with cereal, oatmeal and pretty much anything else you mix milk with you can adapt to skim in no time. I used to dub it as some disgusting milk flavored water concoction but these days it doesn't bother me the least.

soy juice is another story, I just don't dig the taste of it. not even in my macchiato.

Organic milk lasts a lot longer and it's better for kids.

Regular milk can give the chilruns boobies or moobies b/c of the hormones...

1-2% is what I drink.

I CAN drink whole, and I actually prefer whole for chocolate milk and with peanut butter sammiches.

I can't drink skim, it's like colored water.

the uht at harris teeter is the best milk i've ever tasted outside of the fair. it doesn't have that "sour smell" ever that even the freshest regular milk has a hint of. I rather drink tropicana but nothing like some good ole non rgbh every now and then.
