so, i like to watch movies. ok, i love to watch movies. was wondering about a projector and screen....or would i be better off getting some huge flat-screen tv? please help. muchas gracias mi compeneros.

projectors can't get the resolution that a flat screen can.

if you need it bigger than 60", might need some glasses.

A high end surround sound system and projector would be the best, but you're looking at no less than about $9-10k for something good.

I'd say a 850 or at the worst 650 series samsung is your next "cheap" option.

last i heard we had 1080p lcds, as well as 1080p projectors. The ideal home theater set-up is a nice projector and screen.

^^^ I wouldn't nescessarily call it ideal. A large LCD or Plasma screen gives you a bit more flexibility and is easier to set up. HD projectors are pretty cool sure, espescially for parties and stuff like that; but if it's also got to be your TV and gaming screen it might not be a good idea.

A big factor would be the size of your room. If you have a giant living room where 15 of you will gather to watch a movie then you'd lean more towards a projector.

A large TV makes more sense for personal, family, or a few friends watching a movie, especially in a medium size room

^^ You need to have a dimly lit room to really enjoy a projector. That limits its usefulness if its in a room that's shared by others or has multiple purposes. There's also a huge cone of light that people can't walk through without interrupting the image for everyone- not a huge deal though.

What I'm saying is that a projector is nice but sometimes it's not practical to have to dim the lights and completely take over a room every time you want to watch tv or play a video game. They work best in dedicated home theatre rooms or for special occaisions. Otherwise, get a big beautiful HD tv.

^do you like the red bezel or do you even notice it. I recently bought the 550 plasma and decided to sacrifice some potential image quality for a black bezel. When I went to best buy to check the tv's out I found the red to be I think that was mainly because of the bright store lighting, but it was enough to sway my purchase.

^^i have a generally dark room that it's in... so no, i don't notice it much, and when i do, it's not all bad... also i wasn't willing to let a bezel determine my image quality. i guarantee i spend more time looking at the picture than i do the bezel.... but to each their own... it's just an awesome tv

Yea I didn't think the color of the bezel would matter to me, but after seeing the 550 and 650 side by side in the store, I couldn't really see a PQ difference. So for me it would be $350 extra to get the TOC bezel (which I didn't want), a 30k vs 20k contrast ratio (which I couldn't see a difference), and an ethernet port (which I don't care about).

If I were going with the LCD it would be no contest though, I would have taken the red bezel mainly for the 120hz refresh but also 50k vs 30k contrast ratio, 4 vs 5ms response, ethernet port and free wireless adapter. That is a much better upgrade for ~$450 more.

120hz is the product of the factors of 24hz and 30hz, and movies on Blu-ray are 24hz, so you don't get any pulldown jitters. 120 isn't better because it's twice as high as 60, it's better because you don't get any jitters when an object moves at a constant speed across the screen, or the camera pans. The movie camera still films at 24hz.

It's one of those things you see all the time when you're looking for it, but otherwise only notice occasionally.
