Do you put the handle up or down?

I put the handle down so the spoon part or the tines can be washed better. Regular butter knifes go blade up but any really sharp knife goes in blade down, or is hand washed.

handle is always up

and they are sorted the utensil type (fork, knife, spoon) and size (dinner/salad, soup/tea)/sharpness

The handle should always go up, so you don't put your fingers all over the clean part of the utensil that will eventually end up in someone's mouth

the first one in any section goes handle down and then with spoons the next one in that section goes handle up to prevent spooning.

Why do you need to sort them in the dishwasher? So they are easier to put away? Don't the spoons all spoon each other and cause an annoyance? I put mine handle up and try to make sure spoons aren't next to each other because it's annoying when they don't get thoroughly cleaned.

i compulsively sort things..anything and everything. i bet it embarrasses the bf when we go to a restaurant because i sort the sugars/sweeteners and anything else on the table.

It's kind of like the same reason I make your mom take a shower before she takes the pipe....I know I'll probably be ok....I just like to have a little extra piece of mind.

It'll get cleaned either way, but if the water is coming from the bottom of the dishwasher, I'd think it be more likely to get cleaned with the end opposite of the handle down

You gotta alternate the way you put them in so they don't stick together.

i'd like to see some primary literature that suggests a relationship between silverware orientation and cleanliness

I always put them handle up, but I do spread the distribution of the types among the different compartments.

For example if i go to put a spoon in, I will put it in a compartment that doesnt have a spoon yet, to prevent them from coupling and leaving food between them. Same for knives. Forks can be used as separators to keep two spoons apart if you must overfill a specific compartment.

up or down does not matter in terms of getting clean, unless you have a really shitty dishwasher.

But I always put 'em in handle up

And I try to mix up each compartment with spoons, forks and knives, so they don't end up sandwiching themselves with old food.

i just throw the shit in the dishwater....

the water gets hot enough to kill any bacteria so who gives a shit if a little food is left on there...it might look gross but it's not going to hurt you

forks and spoons down, knives up. I've heard that steak knives face down can sometimes get jostled a bit and you risk breaking the tip off in the dishwasher, so I keep them face up

I'm compulsive about sorting, but reading some of these posts has made me rethink my process!

I shall get back with you after I put my stuff in the dishwasher tonight. We will see if I can ward off the sorting beast!

oh and HANDLE UP FOOL!

Indeed. Except for sharp knives because I don't enjoy puncture wounds.

not sure what kind of dishwasher you have...but I put mine handle down so that they get really clean...then you can remove the door mounted rack from the dishwasher, fold it open and grab the utensils from the handle again.
