people tend come down on the original poster in Tech Talk threads when you can post the thread title in google and the first link has the answer.

7-zip FTW

i don't know what there is possibly to hate about it...it's dead simple, free, and if you use the 7z format, you get better compression than with either zip or rar

It's multi-volume support is a joke, error recovery is a joke. Stick with WinRAR

^ despite the fact that i've never had cause to hate on 7z regarding those two points, you can't possibly think that the majority of users who need a multi-format compression program (generally for opening files) could care less about them, right?

and, even if you can get winrar for free through illegal means, why would anyone bother or pay for it when you can get 7z to do 99% of what winrar does (some of it better, i might add) for free? also, is there a 64-bit version of winrar? because there's one for 7z

winrar nags you and that's it. You lose 0 functionality by not registering it. Plus you can always use the shell extension and never even see the nag screen (which a simple escape takes care of anyway)

Most times while it's extremely easy for me to get a winrar license, I just run it in shareware mode because I'm too lazy to hunt it down and enter the key.

rar4lyfe, hell I can't even stand when a set has been repackaged into abcde zips. Let alone some bs like 7z

WinRAR is free.

The registration only gets rid of the splash screen. And you can get a free registration key legally every 6-12 months, WinRAR gives away a public license.

I got nothing against 7z, it's just every compressed file I have archived since 1998 is in .rar format, so I'll stick to that, among other reasons that have already been mentioned.

7z keeps the file table at the END OF THE ARCHIVE.

It has almost zero recovery ability. Being that 99.99999% of my use of compressed files is to Archive old stuff, that is the most critical aspect. RAR's ability to do CRC error correction has already saved me several times on old CD and DVD backups that got scratched.
