and having since renewed the lease.....is that pet deposit still valid?

i am wanting to get a kitten but i cant pay the 200 bucks, but the people i took over the old lease from had paid the 200 bucks already and had a dog. I know that the security deposit they paid rolled over to my name as soon as i signed to take over their lease, i wonder if the same goes with the pet fee/deposit even afer i renewed the lease in august

if you can't afford an extra $200 that may come up all of a sudden - you don't need a pet

if it rolled over, then it should, but it depends on their policy.

ask, make sure they know that you KNOW all the money is rolled over.

You could try asking them for a list of all the fees that rolled over without specifying which ones you're interested in.

pet deposit goes with the security. a cat is one of the least likely animals they`d fuck with you about anyway.

Let me see if I understand this...

You signed a lease without knowing if you were going to be responsible for paying more money.

Good. Well, that said, did the landlord enter the property between the end of the last tenancy amd the beginning of yours, such as to clean the carpets, paint the walls, etc?

It does not. Landlords are specifically entitled to charge a pet deposit/fee that is separate or additional to the security deposit.

just give the landlord a threatening black rage look, and the pet deposit will roll over.

depends on the complex. I lived at a place for 2 years that i paid the pet deposit on. then when me and the ex moved in together we stayed in the same complex, just moved to a 2 bedroom. the apt. manager said he was supposed to charge me a new pet deposit, but since i was such a good tennant he let it slide. also, my ex had a cat that we just never told them about. you should be able to get away with having a cat without even telling them.

well kinda,i considered that a non-issue because i didnt figure id ever have a pet during the remaing 6 months on the lease (didnt really plan on renewing) all i cared about was that the security deposit carried over...of course i knew the deposit had beeen paid i just had never beeen interested in having a pet

Yes the carpets had been cleaned since i renewed

^i just wanna do things the right way, and maybe they tried to say u owed a new deposit cuz you moved to a different apartment, i stayed at the same one, thats cool they let you slide through

i can almost guarantee with only 6 months left you can get away with having a cat and them not finding out. that is, of course, unless the cat tears something up.

i had 2 cats in a couple different apartments while in school that the apt managers never knew about. my roommate and i (when i had a roommate) fostered a litter of 6 kittens with our cats (1 each) and dogs (1 each). the apt complex only knew about the dogs and 1 cat.

the last place i lived for two years had a $300 non-refundable (any part of it) pet deposit

the ability to afford it is not the same as not feeling you should have to pay for it (especially if it's already been paid for once)...i got away with a 45-pound dog for 18 months of those 2 years and they never said anything to me (she was also housebroken and never tore anything up...the worst thing she'd do is put her wet nose on the glass door and leave prints)

i'd try to get away with it, ESPECIALLY since someone already paid the pet deposit (if it ever becomes an issue tell them you were told it would roll over just like the security deposit did)

Pet fees are an option available to landlords. It is at their pleasure to charge it or not. You need to weigh the risk of not saying anything & getting caught (b/c they will stick it to you at that point) vs. appealing the the landlord's sense of good business up front.

One other thing:
If you do decide to do the honest thing, go visit your landlord, in person, and be very friendly about the whole affair. You will get more flies with honey than vinegar, and it is much more difficult to tack on a fee to a polite person that is directly in front of you, esp. if they're demonstrating good faith and honesty by bringing it up front to your attention.

i catch more flies (fruit flies in particular) by using water in a cup, with a little olive oil to float on the surface...it does wonders

^ I too use that trick

on a hijack note: We get a lot of fishermen out here too, and vanilla extract eliminates the fishy smell from fridges, if you ever need to
