Quote : | " Dear Socks``,
I ran for president to renew the promise of America. To rebuild the middle class and sustain the American Dream, to provide the opportunity to those who were willing to work hard and have that work rewarded, to save for college, a home and retirement, to afford the gas and groceries and still have a little left over each month. ...
I want you to ask yourself: Were you in this campaign just for me? Or were you in it for that young Marine and others like him? Were you in it for that mom struggling with cancer while raising her kids? Were you in it for that young boy and his mom surviving on the minimum wage? Were you in it for all the people in this country who feel invisible?
We need to elect Barack Obama because we need a president who understands that America can't compete in the global economy by padding the pockets of energy speculators while ignoring the workers whose jobs have been shipped overseas. We need a president who understands that we can't solve the problems of global warming by giving windfall profits to the oil companies while ignoring opportunities to invest in the new technologies that will build a green economy.
We need a president who understands that the genius of America has always depended on the strength and vitality of the middle class. ...
We've got to ensure that the choice we make in this election honors the sacrifices of all who came before us, and will fill the lives of our children with possibility and hope.
That is our duty, to build that bright future, to teach our children that, in America, there is no chasm too deep, no barrier too great, no ceiling too high for all who work hard, who keep going, have faith in God, in our country, and each other.
That is our mission, Socks``. Let's elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden for that future worthy of our great country.
Sincerely,
Hillary Clinton

okay, then, you're in disagreement with just about every single political analyst and speechwriter who says she knocked it out of the park.

really? cause a number of the analysts i heard last night said she did a good job, and a number of other analysts said it sounded contrived and she was just going through the motions
in fact, a number of the liberal posters on TWW were saying that in the DNC thread last night...you won't find it in this thread though...this thread is basically a glorified PM to Socks''] 8/27/2008 11:36:40 AM |

The politics of class and envy. Fabulous.
Way to take your message into the 21st century, Democrats

^ lol... that goes for me too
twista, i will address the one credible point some are making: some argue she could have spoken more to barack's character and/or abilities.
but that wasn't her job or intention. she was there to bring HER supporters into the Barack camp. her job was not to try and sell Barack to republicans or undecideds in general, but to the people who supported her and are still upset she didnt win.
she told them, in clear and certain language, that Barack represents what she represents and that a vote for McCain is contrary to all that she stands for.
and she was generous and gracious -- while retaining her position as a leader and activist at the front of the fight over core issues for her entire career. she's not stupid. she knows she may have another shot at this 4 or 8 years from now.

shit...her last name is Clinton...her husband is Bill Clinton...not only is she not stupid, she knows she might have a shot THIS YEAR...long way to November...lot of dirt could surface
as far as the analysts, I don't really keep up with their names...but last night I flipped around all the cable news stations and got a mixed bag of opinions about her speech...you're making it sound like 99% of political analysts said her speech was impeccable]8/27/2008 12:04:25 PM |

would it shock you if a non-Fox News analyst wasn't blown away by the speech?
I mean if anything that would show that the other news stations truly are fair and balanced...if everyone else was blown away, that would just be evidence that all the other stations are as liberal as Fox News is conservative

For all the flaws in her campaign, Hillary Clinton has enough political wherewithal to understand that she needs this speech to save both her standing in the Democratic Party as well as her political career. Starting a civil war in what so many Democrats view as a crucial election year would be political suicide for her.
Also, she's still got plenty of political options before her. As mentioned, if Barack's campaign fails, she may have another chance in 2012. Perhaps she can replace Reid as the senate majority leader over a strengthened Democratic majority. However, if she's perceived as having sabotaged Obama's chances for winning the White House, many of the core Democratic constituents will never forgive her. 8/27/2008 12:52:40 PM |

Quote : | "she worked that crowd like .... well, like nothing i've seen since her husband was president." | soooo, apparently you've missed the entire Obama campaign. I mean, I'm not saying I like the guy, but she doesn't come near his skill.
I heard a number of pundits mentioning that it was a well delivered speech, but not completely from the heart, which shouldn't shock anyone. And no, it wasn't just on Fox (which I only was watching since they had it on in the gym) but also NPR and CSPAN.
A few things that stood out: 1) "Sisterhood of the traveling pant-suits". She said what? Yeah, its kinda clever. 2) OBAMA / UNITY pole signs amid a sea of Hillary signs. A LOT of Hillary signs 3) She could have done a better job in attire selection. Yeah, that is picking nits, but politics is all about image. Unless that was a deliberate choice. Hmmm.
All in all a well executed and competently delivered speech. Not a passionate barn-burner.8/27/2008 4:49:21 PM |

From what I've read so far, most people took out of the speech what they took into the speech. She gave just enough to both sides that the ultimate effect of the speech on her former supporters won't be what the Dems are hoping for.8/27/2008 5:04:51 PM |
