Quote :
"
I was talking to a friend of mine's little girl the other day. I asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up and she replied, "I want to be President!" Both of her parents are liberal Democrats and were standing there. So then I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"

She replied, "I'd give houses to all the homeless people."

"Wow - what a worthy goal." I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're President to do that. You can come over to my house and mow, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I'll pay you $50 Then I'll take you over to the grocery store where this homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward a new house."

Since she is only 6, she thought that over for a few seconds. While her Mom glared at me, she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?"

And I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party."

Her folks still aren't talking to me."

I liked it

I wouldn't trust a homeless guy to be working outside my house. They are usually a bit crazy, which is why they're homeless.

I really like to say I'm Indy....even though I'm registered as a Dem (picked one when I was 18 and have been too lazy to change it since) they make it fucking impossible to support them. This is a prime example of why I continue to vote Republican...

I'm curious (and I suppose it'll happen in this thread at some point) what a Dems response to this is...And I'd put money on them making use of nothing but fallacies to make their point.

Yeah with the housing crash, credit crunch, rampant layoffs, faltering economy, etc it saddens me that a make or break criteria of McCains VP pick is gonna be his stance on abortion.

yeah... but what if you did all of that work everyday... for the rest of your life and you never got 50 dollars. your children did the same work and never got their 50 dollars either. The owner and the children of the owner over time amassed hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars from their free labor. Then one day... they decided to start paying for the work. but the problem is the playing field isn't level.

Social programs by the Dems are implemented to try and level the playing field, not just for blacks but for everyone that wasn't given a headstart.

Plus why wouldn't you want to help someone that isn't as fortunate... it's the humane thing to do.

Likewise.

I'm not down with some the ways that businesses manipulate and/or take advantage of legislature, but I have a much bigger problem with a nanny state

So...what about the slackasses who have a headstart, and choose to not use it? Or, basically, anyone who elects to be at a disadvantage?

As far as helping others who aren't as 'fortunate'...by all means, go for it. Don't use my tax dollars to do so - god knows I give enough of my time to others as it is.

To continue on the simplistic children's view, you can either do your work for $50, then have it taken and given to the homeless dude.

-OR-

you can have your $50 taken and given to some dude, so he can go across town and beat up some guy who is doing nothing to you.

Either way you lose your $50.

I'm referring to individuals that had no choice in the matter. Life, the system.... something failed them. They don't know any better. You can't expect things to be drastically different if you suck the life out of someone for 200 hundred years and then in 50 expect a completely different mindset.

slavery: legal in the US from 1654 to 1865... civil rights act of 1964.... so 44 years

You always have a choice in the matter. This isn't 17th century europe, or a caste system.

In fact...oh shit! I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm white. From a middle-class upbringing (if you ignore the years 12-17)

No matter what I (or anyone else) have seen to the contrary, if someone is poor, disadvantaged, or otherwise not at the top of their respective world, it isn't their fault. It just can't be. And because of this, they can't be expected to help themselves, in any respect.

I'll grant you that there are many, many factors working against parts of the population, and specifically, ones that do severe damage...but that doesn't mean that it's the government's job to try to fix it.

abolish the govt

nice one.

I would argue that doing things like printing money, maintaining a military in case of invasion, supporting the interstate system, and funding medical research are all helping the people

But I guess not, and we can go back to the pre-interstate days, and hope whatever store we go to will accept the currency we have on hand.

At least with travel so minimized, we'll all be eating much more locally

^ If we were remaking the gov now that would make sense, but the gov has 100s of years of history that it's been dicking around that can't just be ignored.

Oh, I'm NOT saying the gov't is good now. You also can't expect to fix '100s of years of dicking around' in a short time period, by comparison.

I'm just pointing out to snewf some very valid things our govt does that are, indeed, beneficial to the US, that aren't some social reform programs.

He's the one who wanted to say 'abolish the govt'. And do what, afterwards?

Another governing body will emerge. Maybe one where we don't have any pretense of input.

I didn't say that. The way you look on the outside (white, black, fat, short) It affects your whole perception of the world. It also has an impact on the way others treat you. So... no in a lot of ways you don't and CANT really understand.

I understand that the American system is like a pyramid, with few on top and tons on the bottom. I have no respect for people that don't try and help themselves.

No, it's not the governments job to 'fix' it. But it is their (our) job to help ease the burden.

^^fair enough....and I agree to a point but I find that the name calling is far heavier on the liberal side. I mean I was watching whatever news yesterday and they were showing that liberal radio host guy screaming bloody murder at Michelle Malkin outside the dem convention....He was just screaming and personally insulting her and I find that that happens wayyyyyyyyy more often from the left to the right than vice versa.

I think it's awesome how many people don't want their tax dollars going towards universal or even affordable healthcare or helping the less fortunate, but have no problem with it going towards a retarded war.

both parties have basically become caricatures of themselves, but at least the democrats want to HELP people and do what's RIGHT, as opposed to just ignoring the problem and saying "get a job." The leading cause of bankruptcy is medical dept. Just because someone is poor doesn't mean they don't work. Do those people not have the right to healthcare? As a human being I don't see how you could say no.

Also, it's hilarious to me, that the "religious right", who supposedly love jesus and his teachings, are the ones who love war and killing "towelheads." Does anyone else not see that as really fucking weird? Didn't Jesus teach forgiveness?

I always want to slap people that say this. Tell me, PLEASE, how you would run a country being both socially liberal and fiscally conservative? You should probably instead say "I would love for my government to cure poverty and care for the elderly, yet not tax me for it and remain a virtually invisible institution."

You know a month or so ago I was sitting in the car with my mom and she started ranting about some shit, saying...'Well Bush and his cronies ...etc....something....blah blah...'.

Now I was Communication major and spent an awful lot of time on the subjects of argumentation and persuasion so it irks me to no end to hear that shit from someone. The minute the word 'cronies' came out of her mouth I stopped listening. Didn't matter what she said after that because she'd already, in that first few words, completely lost me. If she had said, 'Bush and his party' or 'Bush and his cabinet' or something like that, then totally different story. And I have found, 10 fold that liberals use this type of fallacious statements to make their arguments and it's for that reason that I just can't listen to them. I can't get past that first crap. I'd be 100% more likely to actually listen to what they were saying if they didn't do it that way. And to be honest, I think it's a big reason why the democrats can't even agree on anything. It's this reason too that I find myself further away from the left.
