so it seems these suckers cost a lot of money

those of you that have bought them, what was your experience like?
ladies - what kind of ring would you like to receive?

is the ring more important or is the way in which it is given more important?

I don't particularly want to buy a diamond (for ethical reasons)... I know this breaks with tradition but is it "okay"? I might be willing to buy an antique diamond - how does one go about this?

wtf would make a diamond antique?

yeah but I might get the stone from an old ring and have it set in a different band
then its sentimental and shit

what about topaz?

blue looks really good on her cause it matches her gorgeous eyes

My engagement ring is small.

I have very small hands with short fingers and I did not want a large ring. The diamonds in the ring are actually from my grandmother's 10th anniversary ring. We paid less than $300 dollars for the setting and to have the diamonds reset.

I really wanted the diamonds from my grandmother's anniversary band. And it was even more meaningful that my husband was willing to ask my grandmother. And it was also very important to me that my husband NOT spend 3 months salary for the ring. I could think of a million and one more ways to spend that much money. (Engagement house, for real.)

^^ If you're going 'blue,' go sapphire.... Topaz is going to show surface scratches after about 5 years & isn't really durable enough to withstand the length of wear of an engagement ring.

You can get sapphires in any color you want, and any hue you want - 9 on mohs hardness scale (diamond is 10)

well I think I'm going to spend the money I got from graduating highschool that I have since invested

if the market doesn't stop flushing itself down the toilet, that is

but I don't really want to spend all of it on the ring... I'd like to be able to propose on a trip

she has always wanted to travel with me and she gets really jealous that I take off with my friends instead of her - I know she really wants to see Paris too

since I am going to be a multimedia student I was thinking I could show her a video I would make of our history together (which goes back nearly a decade) and pop the question at the end... probably sitting in some Parisian cafe

does that sound nice or is it too cheesy?

that's just my initial idea

I only said topaz because that is what is set in this David Yurman ring I liked

can anyone else suggest some designers?

I will either have to pick a good designer or some really opulent ring to impress her "family" cause they are loaded art people

see I started thinking about this because I know her grandparents want to see her successful and happy... and they really love me (I love them too, they're wonderful!)

but her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer again and her grandmother has always been a little ill (bad knees and Parkinson's) so I am starting to feel pressure to move on this in the next year or two

she has said that she never wanted to marry until after she completed medical school so she's got four more years of that - I could stand a long engagement

the engagement house is a good idea except neither of us are sure of where we will be in a very long time

I'm not buying real estate in NYC (where I live) or Columbus, OH (where she is going to school)

You may also want to think about how a wedding band will look butted up against the engagement ring.

We didn't think about that and so we had a harder time picking out bands.

I wanted to go cheaper on my ring and I let Ken know that. I wanted a ring to show that I was taken and that could have been anything. I really did not care. Ken wanted to get me a diamond so I compromised with a cheaper stone and I had two bands saudered around the engagement ring. I think he spent $400 on the engagement ring and $400 on the two wedding bands. The only advice I recommend is don't get a soft stone (like I have an aquamarine and it has already chipped). There plenty of harder stones that are affordable.

the real work will be in digging up all of the pictures of us together cause I'm not one to scrap book or keep "memory" boxes or any of that faggy shit

I don't even take digital pictures of my friends - many times I've commented that I hate pictures with people in them... I prefer landscapes

but I'm sure my mom and friends would help me

That would be affirmative.

Make a mold, take an empty base, there you go. Would be much easier with chocolate and I bet she'd enjoy it more.

she'd be more likely to break her teeth on it.

Unless she has a faulty female gene she's gonna know there is something GOOD in that ring pop and be damn careful.

I told my bf a ring from one of those .25 cent machines would be fine for me, I was like "Shoot it can even be cubic zurconia for all I care as long as it's shiny, oh and I only learned what that word meant last week!"

I don't even know the price range of rings and so on and so forth. Would rather spend the money on the honeymoon or beach wedding.

yeah I'm not gonna take her to Europe and give her a ring pop

looks like tickets should be around $2k for the both of us
I bet my pops would kick me some frequent flier miles to get the business or first class upgrade

wonder what a sweet hotel room is gonna run me a night in Paris - anyone have experience?

$texas for anything in Paris

Take her camping. When she is sore, sweaty, and complaining propose with the ring pop. She can find the ring inside it later. If she doesn't kill you in your sleep the next night it will probably work out okay.

Three months pay is the general rule for how much you should spend.

If you want to give an antique but don't have any engagement rings in the family that you could use...consider that when you purchase the new ring. You may not be able to shun the diamond industry right now, but if you get the right new ring, maybe your great grandson will be able to.

If you really want an antique, there are pawn shops everywhere.

(You mentioned travel. I've always thought I'd appreciate a straw ring from some remote corner of the world a billion times more than some overpriced symbol of human strife from Jolly's.)

well she doesn't wear gold so its silver or platinum for me

three months salary is horseshit cause I'm an unemployed student at the moment

besides I'm sure she'd rather I spend three months salary paying down her student loans
