Also maybe not all of the protestors were violent, but if there are people in the crowd that are acting like morons destroying property threatening cops, than the police have a duty to disperse the crowd. Most Republican protestors do so peacefully but occassionally you get the Pro-Life nutjobs who intimidate and Vandalize Abortion clinics and they are shut down and dispersed also. The media likes to show Liberal protests more so it easier to show the negatives of that. And like somebody said at the DNC protestors weren't allowed within a mile of the event.
