freeware preferably. know of anything good? I've tried a couple now but they don't allow individual playback. I'm trying to determine which tracks are vocal tracks (for karaoke purposes)

I don't think midi files are stored as tracks, they're stored as instruments. And if someone used multiple instruments to mimic a track, then you wouldn't really be able to isolate the track easily, without listening to it, and modifying the score for each instrument independently.

note: this information is based on nothing except how I would have designed the MIDI file format, if I was designing it

actually I found a program to play the tracks individually (spacetoadmidi)

unfortunately, none of the files I've downloaded for the song I want to use have a single track that covers all the voices in the song

youre confused. vocal tracks are not MIDI tracks. MIDI is just a system of using triggers to trigger synths, samples, etc.

If you're trying to break a real song (wav, mp3, etc) down into tracks, you can't. theyre all downmixed into a single stereo track for publishing.

if its a really just a MIDI file you're trying to break up, then its easy. a MIDI file is essentially sheet music. you can view the "scores" so to speak and dissect it. But the file will sound different on different hardware because it will be played on different instruments so to speak. and def no vocals. unless its like synth ooohs and ahhhs. ha

http://ntrack.com/ is really good and free multitrack recording software that supports MIDI as well.
