Looks like he made a lot of enemies today.

Quote :
"Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell apologized this evening for his portrayal of the Mexican immigrant community in today's News & Observer article about his county’s growing Hispanic population.

The apology came in a one-paragraph statement e-mailed to the newspaper shortly before 5 p.m. after today’s newspaper included a front-page article in which Bizzell criticized illegal immigrants for “breeding like rabbits” and declared, “Mexicans are trashy.”

Tony Asion, the executive director of the North Carolina nonprofit advocacy group El Pueblo, said he had to stop reading the article because the sheriff’s comments made him so angry. Bizzell’s apology was not good enough, he added.

“I don’t want his apology, I want his badge,” said Asion, who was born in Cuba. “As a 20-year veteran of the Delaware State Police force, I resent the fact that he’s even a cop.”

Bizzell’s comments were made in a series of four interviews conducted over a period of more than a month. In his statement today, Bizzell apologized for making “broad statements that reflected on the legal and law-abiding Hispanic population — that was never my intention.”

Bizzell said the statements he made during the interviews were influenced by a fatal wreck involving a drunken driver last year that dramatically changed his focus. The driver, who had previously been repeatedly charged with drunken driving, struck and killed a Selma boy in April.

“I obviously let my anger over this crime flash during the N&O interview. Since then I have worked with Federal authorities to deport illegal immigrants that commit crimes because these criminals ultimately have a negative impact on all the good law-abiding residents in Johnston County,” Bizzell said in the statement. “This is not a reflection on all immigrants as legal immigration is both wanted and needed. I always have and always will carry out the duties of the Office of Sheriff to protect all the people in Johnston County without regard to where someone is from or their citizenship status.”

Bizzell could not be reached for further comment. A man answering the phone at the sheriff’s home this evening said Bizzell had gone to church.

Until he gave up the post in July, Bizzell was the president of the N.C. Sheriff’s Association. During his term, he helped make North Carolina one of the most aggressive states in the nation for deporting illegal immigrants. Efforts to reach Craven County Sheriff Jerry G. Monette, current president of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association, and other association officers were unsuccessful today.

Speaking from the State Fairgrounds today where El Pueblo was celebrating its 15th annual Fiesta del Pueblo, Asion said Bizzell’s statement of apology does not make up for the prejudice and bigotry revealed in the sheriff’s concern over Johnston County’s changing demographic. Bizzell had said: “Everywhere you look it’s like little Mexico around here.”

“A person elected to represent the entire community should be ashamed of making statements like this,” Asion said. "

The original article:
http://www.newsobserver.com/news/immigration/story/1209646.html

I wasn't surprised that someone held Bizzell's views; I was surprised that an elected official would be so blunt (for lack of a better word) with a newspaper reporter.

Bizzell should have been more careful about his statements, but the people in his jurisdiction are negatively affected by all the crime associated with illegal immigrants. Something tells me not too many people in Johnston County really care what Tony Asion has to say as long as the sheriff is getting results.

A Sheriff isn't elected to represent the community, a Sheriff is elected to enforce the laws of the county. A Sheriff is also elected be legal residents of his community. <shrug>.

Having an uncle in a semi rural county sheriff's department, and hearing some of the shit that goes on, it isn't surprising that he has these views.

There were plenty of drunk driving accidents that involved legal, white Americans too. I don't know why one with an illegal would stick in his mind.

The US does have issues with illegal immigration, but painting immigrants as trashy is not the right way to solve these problems. Do you think the people in Johnston Co that hold these same views are going to be able to discriminate their scorn between the legal/illegal immigrants (or even the various races of brown people)? I agree that the apology was not enough, and I don't think he needs to be fired (although I wouldn't shed a tear), but some other type of punishment is in order... maybe force him to take a week of un-paid diversity training or something.

Wouldn't making bigoted statements about Mexicans tend to encourage the bigoted thought that all small-time southern sheriffs are bigoted?

Have you been to a courtroom in one of these areas lately? They're packed with Mexicans and it isn't because of the faults of the cops.

I think he is doing what he is elected to do. Sheriffs are not exactly elected to dispense compassion and analyze the laws. They are elected to use the laws to solve problems in the communities.

I feel bad for the families who have been here so long there kids have never even seen mexico and yet still have to fear being deported. Having that said it is not the sheriffs fault they can not get drivers license, it is the federal government. It the fault of all of the people we have elected to congress who have done nothing to come up with a sensible and effective solution to this problem.

Getting mad at the Sheriff for enforcing the laws is basically shooting the messenger. The ones to really be upset with are in Washington. They looked the other way while it was convenient and recently will not do anything since its an election year.

He was elected to perform racial profiling? Because his statements in that article basically boil down to "I use racial profiling."

I've been in courtrooms that were packed with blacks. Would it be appropriate for a Sheriff to say, "Blacks are trashy, they breed like rabbits, they're prone to crime?"

You know what else rural courtrooms are packed with? White trash that couldn't tell a Mexican from an Arab or an Indian if his life depended on it. Now you've got the goddamn Sheriff running around telling this same white trash that he basically shares and condones their views on Hispanics, which, since they can't tell the difference, basically means "brown people."

Bizzell should be made example of, but I'm afraid Johnston County isn't going to be up to the task of tossing him out.

JC won't toss Bizzell for these statements, he'll most likely get more votes when he's up for election next. most JC residents like the guy, he has made lots of progress against meth production that runs rampant in the southern part of the county, as well as marijuana production / sales.

"White trash" is a fairly easily definable subset of "white people." It conjures specific images, primarily with regards to ignorance, but also to socioeconomic class. Hardly anybody uses the phrase "white trash" to refer to whites in general. This is as opposed to the terms "n*gger" and "mexican," which are generalizations most often applied to entire races of people.

I'm willing to generalize about a specific subset of a race characterized by high levels of ignorance and intolerance, coupled with a predominating inability to advance their status or that of their children due to low levels of education. For what it's worth, I tend to use comparable phrases to describe analogous groups of minorities.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand the heat gets turned up substantially.

Quote :
"Bizzell on Sunday apologized for the comments, which included accusing illegal immigrants of "breeding like rabbits" and declaring that "Mexican are trashy." The original story about Bizzell and his opinion of illegal immigrants appeared in Sunday's edition of the paper.

Parker asked the sheriff to turn over arrest records, jail book entries, documents related to license and DWI checkpoints and statistical information about arrests. She asked for the records by Sept. 19.

A spokesperson for Bizzell said this morning the sheriff was at a meeting outside the county and was not immediately available for comment.

Jennifer Rudinger, executive director of the ACLU of North Carolina, said in a news release that the groups wanted to find out whether Bizzell or his deputies have engaged in racial or ethnic profiling or discrimination as they enforce the law.

"Blanket assertions like this about an entire class of people, again despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, if put into practice, are the very essence of racial and ethnic profiling by law enforcement that are prohibited under state law," Rudinger said in the news release.

She cited these examples of Bizzell's comments:

* Pointing to tiendas that have cropped up amid local barbecue joints, saying, "You can't even read the durned sign. Everywhere you look, it's like little Mexico around here."

* Condemning undocumented Latino immigrants for "breeding like rabbits" and for spreading a culture of drunkenness and violence, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

* Claiming that undocumented Latino immigrants "rape, rob and murder" American citizens, fail to pay taxes and drain social services, again despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

* "How long is it going to be until we're the minority?"

* "Mexicans are trashy."

* "When people think about illegal Mexicans, you know the first thing they think of?" Bizzell says -- "driving drunk and shooting."

Parker's letter said that in addition to the ACLU of North Carolina, she was writing on behalf of the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina, Common Sense Foundation, El Pueblo, N.C. Campaign Against Racial Profiling, N.C. Council of Churches, N.C. Justice Center, Southern Coalition for Social Justice and UNC School of Law Immigration/Human Rights Policy Clinic.

The NAACP's branch in North Carolina joined the ACLU in condemning Bizzell's comments.

"We know how dangerous it is when someone with a badge spews racist innuendos," the Rev. William Barber, head of the NAACP in North Carolina, said this morning. "It gives license to people who don't have a badge. We won't stand for it."

He said Bizzell is among many politicians who are stirring fears about the Hispanic community for political benefit.

This afternoon, Juvencio Rocha Peralta, head of the Greenville-based advocacy group AMEXCAN, became the second Hispanic leader to call for Bizzell's resignation. (El Pueblo's executive director, Tony Asion, issued the first call Sunday.)

Rocha Peralta said Bizzell's comments about Mexicans, a term Bizzell uses as a catch-all for Hispanics, were an insult.

"He's an elected official that's been put in place to serve the community, not to criticize and accuse the community," Rocha Peralta said.

He said Bizzell and other leaders who resent an influx of Hispanics should deal with reality. "We're here and we're not going anywhere," said Rocha Peralta, who has lived in North Carolina for 26 years. "We have good and bad people just like anyone else."

Bizzell has been a supporter of Sen. Elizabeth Dole, appearing at press conferences with her to speak about the impact of illegal immigration. Her office said today that Bizzell did not speak for them.

Dole was in Johnston County for a fundraiser Monday, but her chief of staff, Brian Nick, said she has not been in contact with Bizzell since the story ran.

"People's words are reflections of themselves," Nick said. "Sen. Dole should be judged on her own statements, and obviously Sheriff Bizzell should be judged on his, and that's why he apologized."

Bizzell is older so if he went to college, he probably didn't learn much about race relations. I imagine his job his pretty difficult, and he hasn't found the time to meaningfully educate himself--he needs to find the time though.

He has a legitimate concern. As a sheriff, more people to protect without more revenue is a problem. He might say something like, "I don't see how I can protect people who don't pay taxes for me to do so." Then some college boy who has never been a sheriff says, "Well, you know, even though they often don't pay taxes, they work cheap and don't collect social security so ultimately they're not a financial burden." That's probably true. But on a personal level, on the level where Bizzell has to get out of bed and do his job every day, illegal immigrants aren't working for him and social security don't mean shit. He needs more resources now.

I suspect he sees illegal immigration as a big problem on a global and personal level. He's probably very annoyed that nobody seems to be doing something about an issue with which he's concerned. People can become obsessed with shit when they feel powerless over it. It's so obvious to them so they think everybody else has gone mad for not getting it...when in fact, they're the ones slowly going mad.

Furthermore, there are cultural differences between groups. If we can't discuss these differences, they will cause unnecessary problems. Bizzell made no apparent attempt to reconcile his observations with the facts. He also didn't seem very interested in understanding the issues--so he can't really be forgiven on the grounds that he was innocently trying to start a dialogue.

It's more likely that he was frustrated and talking mad shit. And someone like that should not be trusted to police our communities. If it's not too late, get this guy some education!

I've searched that article three times, and I can't find any evidence of anybody suing anybody.

Not the ACLU.

Not the Democrats.

Not any of the Hispanic advocacy groups.

Not the NAACP.

Quote :
"So much for freedom of speech.

Aclu and the democrats will wipe that out soon."

You realize that the biggest thing that the ACLU does is protect freedom of speech, right? They'll defend Nazi's right to march in Jewish neighborhoods. How does that fit into your "the ACLU is a bunch of PC free-speech mongerers" theory?

Quote :
"The ACLU is one of the biggest pieces of shit this country has ever known"

God forbid that people organize in order to protect first amendment and other rights from legislators and cops who don't know how the constitution works.

There is a lot I don't like about the ACLU ("Rabid about the bill of rights -- all of them except that second part"), but to call them "one of the biggest pieces of shit this country has ever known" is a laughable exaggeration.

Quote :
"He might say something like, "I don't see how I can protect people who don't pay taxes for me to do so.""

I was under the impression that county revenue generally came from property taxes. Immigrants who own houses pay property taxes on them, whether they're legal or not. Immigrants who rent their residence pay property taxes through their rent. Immigrants who own registered vehicles (a fair percentage) pay property taxes on those. So even if Bizzell had said something like this, he'd be a colossal dumbfuck.

Quote :
"He needs more resources now."

No. He doesn't. He needs to be replaced, because he's too outdated and too ignorant to understand what's happening to his county or how to deal with it. All public officials want more money for their departments. There aren't a lot of sheriff's offices around the country where sheriffs are saying, "You know what, we have just the right amount of money" or "We've got too much damn money." But most of them manage to handle that in a way that doesn't involve disparaging an entire race -- and if you'll recall, he said Mexicans were trashy, not "illegal immigrants are trashy."

Bizzell has demonstrated that he's incapable of dealing with the changes that face his county. What's more, he demonstrated inexcusably poor judgment by saying the things he said. As a high-ranking public official in the 21st century, it shouldn't be rocket science to figure out, "You know, I probably shouldn't tell this reporter that I think Mexicans are trashy and breed like rabbits, that might come back to haunt me."

Quote :
"this guy is probably just breaking down. he needs some more help/funds whatever to control the onslaught of illegals."

This is just fucking brilliant. I'm praying to Christ Almighty God you're a troll, because I don't think I can take one more sack of shit like you gaying up the soap box. Let's hand the ethnically-profiling, vocal racist more guns and money. Fucking brilliant.

^^^^^^12 people in a two-bedroom apartment create less revenue than 12 people in three two-bedroom apartments.

We need to get serious about stopping illegal immigration or providing for citizenship.

In the meantime, folks like Sheriff Bizzell have to handle the mess while the rest of us enjoy cheaper goods and services. The fact that Bizzell is an idiot racist illustrates one of the many reasons why we need to address the issue of immigration more earnestly.

I'm not okay with the fact that folks have to compete for jobs/wages with people who are willing to work for four bucks an hour. I'm also not okay living in a country where people come to realize a better quality of life and end up enslaved, abused, prostituted, etc... Illegal immigration is a problem.

Isn't this essentially what defines America, particularly from a republican standpoint, is people working hard to achieve their goals?

And, IIRC, the statistics show that while illegals are paid less, I don't think it's anywhere near $4/hr, I don't think they usually go below minimum wage even. And overall, enough of them eventually move in to their own houses, that I would guess there's a net gain in property taxes per capita WITH the immigrants than without them (IOW the ones living with normal housing situations out-weight the clown-house situations).

I think you're drastically overestimating the extent to which these setups put a dent in property tax revenue. It's more common among immigrants than it is among other low-income groups, but not by some vast, government-crippling margin. You could just as easily say that poor people are responsible for Bizzell's budget woes.

And actually, let's talk about those "budget woes." In a three page article Bizzell complains about the lack of tax revenue once, briefly. And even then he isn't complaining that he doesn't have enough money, just that the Mexicans aren't paying any (which is, of course, untrue).

Meanwhile, he goes on to make somewhere approaching a dozen separate comments about how Mexicans are a pack of violent drunks that breed uncontrollably.

No, this guy's problem isn't money. It isn't resources spread thin. It's resources spread incompetently by a bigoted old fool with a badge supported by a pack of bigoted old fools with ballots. I don't see him suggesting outreach and education programs -- I see him preaching crackdowns and deportations. I don't see him trying to understand the changes he's facing -- I see him bitching about them because he's so set in his ways that spaghetti is too exotic for him.

Quote :
"Bizzell is a farm boy so steeped in traditional American culture that he won't even eat spaghetti, much less a taco."

I've lived in North Carolina all my life. I love it like it were an extension of my own flesh and blood. And when I read some of the comments by Johnston County locals and their pea-brained dinosaur of a sheriff, it almost makes me ashamed to be from here. For that alone he's lower than eel shit. Now, I don't wish the man harm. His permanent removal from any sort of public office would satisfy me completely. But if that ignorant fuck gets run over by a drunk, God-fearing, Johnston County-native white boy, I'm gonna laugh my Carolina-born ass off.

Bizzell may have apologized publicly, but I think his authentic opinions are out of the barn.

With those statements, he has shown himself too bigoted to continue in his position. He should resign or be voted out of office.

Trying to handle the illegal immigrant problem is hard enough without people like Bizzell and his stupid statements.

I'm from a little town called Sophia, North Carolina. Unofficial estimates put it at something approaching 1/3 Ku Klux Klan membership. About half an hour away, Asheboro has plenty of Hispanics -- Sophia is basically 100% white. Virtually all of them qualify as "redneck," and will tell you as much.

One of my closest neighbors in Sophia has had a collapsed single-wide trailer on his property for the better part of a decade. Roof caved in, completely uninhabitable. He, as well as a number of other people in the area, have broken-down automobiles in their yards, in addition to garbage piles. If you ask around, many people will be proud to have no more than a middle school education. In short, much of the almost exclusively white population of Sophia is as "trashy" as it is possible to be in this country. Certainly trashier than any of the Mexicans I've lived near (and since I live in Gorman Crossings, there's plenty). Now, I've not spent a lot of time in Johnston County. Maybe their rednecks are inexplicably cleaner than rednecks in Randolph and Guilford counties, where I've spent most of my time. My guess is they aren't. My guess is that they're just as filthy as any immigrant.

Let's talk about some other things you said. "Most rednecks just hate people over here illegally." Interesting. How, exactly, do these rednecks know who is here legally and who isn't? What is their degree of understanding about the immigration process? Do you really think they distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants? Or do you think they see brown people who speak Spanish and assume they are illegal?

What about "raping their daughters?" The article in question specifically says that violent crime rates are noticeably down since immigration picked up. Drunk driving is up, yeah. It needs to be dealt with. But where's the evidence of good, upstanding, pure white women being more likely to be raped now than they were before?

Perhaps it is telling that you, who have presumably lived in this country your whole life, can't even use the god damned language properly. When you can come back with some punctuation and a better spelling of relatively simple words like "definitely," you'll be just slightly easier to take seriously.

People like you give me mixed feelings. I dread the day when your kind get a blindfold and a cigarette, even if it is a waste of a perfectly good fucking cigarette. But I'm still going to laugh kind of hard when it does.

You're a shitbag, too. Maybe not a hateable shitbag, but a shitbag nonetheless. I'd rather be associated with mincing pansies than with wannabe hitlerites any day of the week, no question.*

I'm going to qualify that based on the post history. Your response wasn't quite accurate. It was asked whether white people were ashamed of "the rednecks dumbing down their people," which I interpreted to mean a specific subset of rednecks. I may have been wrong.

If you despise the particular caste of redneck in question, I take back what I said. If you still despise "liberal elites" more than that group, then I stand by my "fuck you."

The "busted" face is one of the most difficult to interpret. I can't tell whether you're saying I'm busted or I busted the other side with my comment. Just in case, I hope the irony was apparent.

Out of context, it sounds messed up... I knew what you meant though (although it's still cracking me up)

Heh, well, if out-of-context quotes haven't brought me down yet, I don't reckon they're going to anytime soon.
