I am just really concerned because it turns out that Balin was part of the company assembled by Thorin Oakenshield to kill the dragon Smaug and retake the mountain kingdom of Erebor.

To me that says that he doesn't care about the environment and is clearly in favor of an imperialist foreign policy, however, I clearly have no idea what any of that means.
