Chapel Hill looks over the next couple years to scale back and eventually turn the unofficial event into a "community themed event".
One more reason why that place over the hill sucks. Hopefully Hillsborough St takes a hint and starts really ramping up. 9/23/2008 7:50:14 AM |

I know they've been talking about doing this for awhile. It's weird though, I went in 2001 and I don't remember any checkpoints.
It sucks you have a few assholes who ruin the fun for everyone else. I wouldn't dream of Raleigh letting an event like this happen. 9/23/2008 8:02:22 AM |

Canceling a popular party that's steeped in tradition and replacing it with a lame roped off event where a checked ID will net you $0.50 pizza and a jump in a bounce castle. Where have I heard this before?

.... what the hell is wrong with you people? Do you have no long-term memory? The town of Chapel Hill has been more than accommodating for the yearly Halloween party, considering how crowded and dangerous it is and how many underage people are running around drunk all night. If they want to scale back on it to try to decrease their liability, then that's their right. Are you forgetting that the Raleigh police and town council have effectively shut down all partying in Raleigh, as a direct result of a little party we used to have called Brent Road? Time for "Hillsborough St to shine"? are you fucking kidding? They won't even allow students to walk down the street for 30 minutes after football or basketball upsets. Good luck getting a town-sanctioned event to close the street down to allow drunk people to run around in costumes all night 9/23/2008 8:27:58 AM |

This wont happen, unless Chapel Hill is willing to pay all the bars for business lost. Its a simple bit of economics. Im waiting to see the business response. They definatly arnt supporting this. This is called the police are too F-ing lazy.

I don't think they will ever shut down the hike. All of those places are public bars. Are they going to close every bar for the entire weekend before exams? They can't tell the buisnesses to close for the week just because they expect a large crowd of people to show up.

I've heard a lot of talk about Chapel Hill trying to scale down the event. But the only progress they've made is 1 less bus to get people to downtown which wont make a bit of difference. Its a symbolic gesture at best, and nothing else will happen. And yeah the bars aren't going to give up that $. But with all the talk of how much safer its going to be this year, if anything there is going to be a larger crowd. 9/23/2008 8:03:44 PM |

they arent public bars, they are private businesses
just like all the houses on brent road are private residences

I agree. Raleigh hates students. Chapel Hill loves students. cracking down on Franklin St isn't going to change that fundamental difference. The Halloween party will still go on, unlike a certain Raleigh block party 9/23/2008 8:44:42 PM |

Forty-five percent of businesses reported slight damage from the revelry, and another 19 percent reported major damage to their establishments.
Other downtown events got better reviews from business owners, with only 9 percent saying those events were bad for business.

Don't they usually close the streets and let the revelers walk around in the street? If so, why not just keep the streets open to traffic? Might reduce the crowds a little. I don't care if stupid drunks get hit by cars, it's their own fault for being stupid.
I don't think the town government has the right to order a halt on alcohol sales after 9PM one day of the year if it's 2AM any other day. Business as usual should be permitted, but don't shut down the streets just because it's Halloween.
I'm always firmly opposed to DUI checkpoints, no matter what day it is. It assumes that all motorists are drunk and must prove that they are not (guilty until proven innocent). If you opt to drive on Halloween night, you should be fully aware of the increased possibility of drunk drivers.
And please don't turn it into a lame-ass family fun block party like First Night. I hate having screeching toddlers running around tripping people. 9/24/2008 10:48:40 AM |

N.C. State working on Halloween plan Raleigh, N.C. — While Chapel Hill authorities plan to rein in Halloween revelers, student groups at North Carolina State are looking to expand their celebration in Raleigh.
Jay Dawkins, student body president at NCSU, said the university community is working with businesses and campus and Raleigh police to plan a safe and successful party along Hillsborough Street.

CH has decided on at least 2 things.. 1) Chapel Hill Transit buses will no longer provide shuttle services to the downtown from area Park and Ride lots. 2) A traffic diversion plan will limit access to the downtown area by reducing lanes on Raleigh Road/N.C. Highway 54, Martin Luther King Drive and East Franklin Street.
If I see any little kids running around, I'm scaring the crap out of them and ask their parents why aren't they home being safe from me. 10/4/2008 3:38:08 PM |

I really dont see a plan that will work in limiting the Chapel Hell celebration i think they will just have to end up pulling a brent rd and putting police in full force out there telling people to GTFO 10/4/2008 3:45:09 PM |

You sir a fucking douche.
Who gives a flying fuck if a 19 year old is drinking a beer on halloween. Perhaps the police should stick to real police work such as breaking up fights, catching rapists, getting drug dealers, handing out DUI's, and keeping the Halloween crowd under control. Instead of harassing 18-20 year olds that are forced to sneak beer in their pants pockets.
I see though Chapel Hill has learned from NCSU about being a tradition killer.
