PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk

Quote :
"WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

"We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child," said a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry's."

there was this article i had to read for my philosophy class about what would happen if we freed the domesticated farm animals. like there is a difference between treating them well (free range, killing them humanely etc) and just freeing them all. i can't remember the article but it was good. talked about how they wouldn't know how to eat on their own, they'd starve/freeze to death in the winter, etc etc....like not very humane things.

i don't know. maybe someone else has read it bt probably not.

I think they're just suggesting that in attempt to undermine cow's milk.

Personally, I recommend coconut milk for vegan frozen deserts.

It's pure win in my opinion.

That sounds really good actually. I've made mousse out of coconut milk before. Can't think of a reason why ice cream wouldn't work.

People need to stop giving money to PETA. Let them implode and choke on their ideologies. I'm not drinking some random woman's breast milk, that's just fucked up.

i think they did it to get more recognition and publicity more than anything. they'd have to have woman farms that harvest sammiches and breast milk to even begin to match their current profit.

EXACTLY. FUCK YOU PETA.

They didn't even know whether or not it could be legally done and clearly that restaurant had only been doing it for a short while, yet they suggested that Ben and Jerry's do that as if it's just so easy to do. Where the fuck would you get those quantities (QUAN TITTIES SON) of human breast milk? They probably figured they'd fall for that shit with all of the hippie names they have for their ice cream.

So it is important to not use cows milk so they can feed their babies, so human brest milk should be used instead. What about the human babies?

pita is very loosely organized, one part of pita could be doing something that helps animals while unbeknown to them some guy who is technically part of pita but isn't answerable to them dresses like a fish in a school parking lot and screams at the kids to not eat fish sticks.

I just tasted a homemade coconut milk desert. Blended with bananas and cocoa powder. Not as smooth as Coconut Bliss, but absolutely delicious. And the ingredients cost me less than two bucks.

I'm guessing that human breast milk does not have lactose. Anyone have any info on that?

If it doesn't, I'd drink/eat stuff made from it. Fuck it.

My nutrition professor came out and said today that he tried his wife's breastmilk and in his opinion it was a whole lot sweeter than cow's milk.

On that note, I don't understand the whole face. I mean if we drink cow's and goat's milk, what is so gross about drinking our own species milk. I haven't had any in like 20 years, but I'm not going to knock it until I have another opportunity.

^ It prompts the face because it reminds most people of the fact that they sucked on their mom's tatas only when they were little. Who wants to do that now, even if you're skipping the direct contact?

See, I don't get it. Why is it gross? Why is drinking breast milk from more disgusting than regular milk? Is it because you just aren't sure what the person that it came from has been up to like smoking or drugs? Diseases? Is it just the thought of drinking milk from another person?

Getting cows milk isn't the cleanest either. Add to that all the hormones and shit they give them. Has anyone seen the Dirty Jobs episode where he goes to the dairy plant? http://www.mininova.org/tor/1384995

They scorch the hairs off the udders with a gas flame, then knock off the caked on manure, put the suckers on and let it ride. I love milk but, like a lot of animal foods, I don't want to see how it's obtained.

^,

I'd eat that too.

It's loosely organized in that the farther you get from the core of the organization, the more sensible people you find... PETA isn't like some other activist groups where the fringe nutfuckers are on the fringe of the organization... In PETA, the crazy comes directly from the top.

^^^ Well yeah. Humans are totally unpredictable, and the quality of human milk would be near impossible to regulate. Animals are not people and this makes it a lot easier to control their diets and their living environments so you produce a consistent, high-quality product. I don't know how many women would sign up to be put on a restrictive diet that made them all lactating fat-cows and paid them $puerto_rico to do it.

Yeah, the idea is a bit creepy, but more importantly... how the FUCK do you suppose a company is supposed to get that goddamn much HUMAN MILK!?!?? Titty farms? Like in the fucking Matrix but with breast milk? It's completely fucking stupid, dehumanizes women and humanity in general (I'm not offended on a personal level, but other people certainly should be), and it's COMPLETELY FUCKING STUPID.

I have tasted my own breast milk. It is not gross. It is actually very sweet -- much sweeter than cow's milk. I do not think that drinking breast milk is necessarily disgusting.

HOWEVER, as I stated in the other thread about using breast milk in restaurants: there are a lot of drugs and illnesses that can be passed through breast milk. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to consume a complete stranger's breast milk. The amount of screening necessary would be comparable to blood donation. It would just be crazy.

Not to mention, it takes a lot of work to produce very little milk. Mothers who have extra milk that meet guidelines donate their breast milk to milk banks for the use of infants other than their own.
