Rofl. Some company passed out flyers today, offering to replace our wooden mailbox post with a PVC one for a cost of course. Someone posted to the neighborhood message board asking if they conform. Then someone else posted this:

Quote :
"The developer of xxxx placed a wooden post and black mail box with white numerals. The HOA covenant specifically states " as similar to current" which would mean wood post. Therefore it is my opinion that our posts need to be wood unless a 2/3 vote of the HOA is taken to change to another material. Should this vote be taken, no home owner may be allowed to change their post unless the post is such as needing replacement."

Unreal.

hoa's are useful for some things (albeit, not for the majority)

for instance, this covenant keeps your neighborhood from looking like shit when people put up PVC mailboxes

This is why I'm glad I live in a non-HOA neighborhood. Not having to pay monthly HOA fee ftw.

we got a posting from our hoa about a month ago on the front door saying that the private parking lot is being repaved, and we'd have to get street parking permits.. they plan to tow any car left in the lot when they begin

but didnt give a date or even any indication of when it may or may not be

awesome

It's clearly time to begin the purge.

Citizens, grab your rifles. We are going to take this HOA down starting with its head.

i'm on my HOA's board - HOAs serve an important purpose if handled correctly - sadly a lot aren't - the people that whine rarely every step up so it just continues down that path

we had a big meeting tonight to go over 12 amendments - 4 to the bylaws and 8 to the covenants - 47 votes out of 73 already - have 30 days now to get the rest

we were just turned over to the residents by the builder late last year and the template bylaws and covenants we were given had tons of holes

for the bylaws we just need 2/3 of quorum which equates to only 19 yeses and for the covenants we need 2/3 of the entire neighborhood which is 49 yeses - out of the 26 houses left we think we can get the 10 more yeses on some of the line items we need but it'll take ~2 weeks to track down some of the more elusive people

A PVC mailbox is virtually indistinguishable from a wood one from the road. Someone else has chimed in claiming the covenants were updated in April, and anyway, the original covenants didn't make a specific stipulation on wood, just general style. If anything, a PVC mailbox will make the 'hood look nicer.

I've been lucky with the two HOAs I've been under. My last one was $33, and that got me nice pool access. The current HOA is $45 a month, again, we get pool access, and this one does a few more events.

I don't know that an HOA is really necessary, however, some neighbors a few doors down have had vehicles (and trailers) parked on the street perpetually, and I feel pretty confident if I wanted to get them off I could used the HOA to enforce the rules.

It's not that hard to tell the difference between shitty cheap plastic and wood.

You're right. It's probably easier to tell the rotten in need of paint wooden posts from the pristine (though maybe needing a little wash) PVC posts as you drive past at 20-30 mph from the road

Well, I'm just saying, most people regard pvc as cheap.

And wood needs no paint. If the wood is already painted, then whatever, pvc won't look much different. I was thinking natural, nice wood.

I plan to use the hollowed out skull of an HOA developer as a mailbox to save myself the trouble of erecting a "Git off ma land!" sign, with obligatory shotgun holes.

my dues are $25 / year. it goes towards treating the little pond with chemicals and insurance if some kid falls in. $25 / year is worth it to me to keep people from painting their houses purple with orange shutters.

That's a completely different situation. I can imagine almost all posts in your average neighborhood in Cary, Raleigh, etc, will have a white post and black box.

we have one at my townhouse. they keep the grass cut and weed-eaten, but now we are having a problem with the fire code. people keep parking in the "street" and not leaving 6 meters for the firetrucks to get farther inside the neighborhood. i wanted to complain because it is always the same people, not visitors, but we're supposed to have a bunch of people come stay with us in a week or two and i don't want to be hypocritical

Rofl. People that say that either want to be eccentric with their property, or have never lived in a place where their neighbors were eccentric and that bothered them.

What does the South have to do with it? Drunk rednecks in Wisconsin are forever shooting each other during deer season. Pennsylvania probably has more guns per capita than Johnson Co.

how self-important does an HOA have to be for it to have COVENANTS

Yeah, we have a couple covenants in mine. One is you cannot have any cars/boats with expired tags in the driveway/sideyard/backyard.

In some instances, you're talking about covenants concerning million dollar plus pieces of property. Calling them 'rules' is a bit unprofessional in this case if you ask me.
