The Matt Millen era is over in Detroit.

The embattled Lions team president and chief executive officer is leaving the position, his wife Pat told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

NFC North blog

Firing Matt Millen will only matter for the Lions if they find the right replacement to rebuild the franchise, ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert writes. Blog

"We're fine," Pat Millen said. "In the world's view, this may look like failure. It's been a hard road, football-wise, but we've gotten a lot of eternal blessings. We'll move forward. I told him, 'You're out of football prison now' and we have a greater purpose."

FOXSports.com first reported Wednesday that Millen had been removed from his position. It was unclear whether he had been fired or had resigned, according to the report.

The move comes two days after Bill Ford Jr., the son of team owner William Clay Ford, publicly said he would have fired Millen if he had the authority to do so.

The Lions are 31-84 under Millen. But until this point, the Lions have resisted widespread demands from fans seeking Millen's ouster.

According to the report, Millen had informed a number of employees about the change on Wednesday morning and had large packing boxes in his office. "

i would say it's amazing how long he kept his job, but having lee fowler as an AD just kindof takes the awe out of it.

Does anyone think that Matt Millen is basically the same as Lee Fowler. Obviously they way they have failed at their jobs is different (Millen = horrible drafts, Fowler = bad coaching searches, blaming fans, using facilities as an excuse for being god awful), but both, until today for Millen, have kept their jobs despite everyone else clamoring for their removal. Plus they kind of look alike too. Mustaches suck.

As the news broke that Matt Millen would no longer be Detroit’s team president and CEO, Lions fans expressed joy, elation, hope and caution.

“The Lions can finally start to get better,” SkBigSky wrote. “They won’t have Millen keeping them in the deepest hole that no team could crawl out of.”

“This is better than my wedding day,” DaggerHawk wrote.

I don't know. Did Millen recently get an award for excellence from the NFL?
