The PBS gubernatorial debate tonight was actually pretty good. I can't imagine why Purdue didn't show up other than to punish UNCTV for allowing Munger. It just doesn't make any sense to me to skip a prime time debate broadcast statewide on at least 3 channels.

Maybe she wanted the Republican and Libertarian to fight it out amongst themselves and split the vote. Indeed they both came off as well-spoken and sincere. Had she showed up, it would have been nice to actually hear some real disagreement in the debate.

I'd like to think it's just laziness on her part, but I know better than to believe anything in a campaign isn't planned. Anyone have any insight into this?

that was stupid, and I support Bev Purdue. What was her stance or statement on why she didn't?

So she agreed to 5 debates and the fifth one is in Charlotte with all three candidates. Problem solved.

That's fine and dandy, but what impression does that decision create among the voters... especially after her last debate.

Second and final PBS debate, no Purdue.

"Woody Allen once said that 80% of success was just showing up. Ms. Purdue has failed that test again tonight."

As a democrat I find this absolutely pathetic.

Bev skipped the debate because her handlers know it would be a really bad idea to put her out there after how bad she did in the first two debates. She has also done her best to stay away from any state wide debates. Of those five "debates" that she agreed to, many of them were just forums with out any rebuttals, not real debates. Even Democrats have to see the amount of corruption that has gone on in their party at the state level. Two members of the DOT who are top fundraisers for Bev have had to resign in disgrace in the last few months because it was shown that they steered taxpayer money to benefit their own real estate holdings. Please don't vote for Bev and continue the "pay to play" system that rules state government.

this really makes her look bad, I'm rethinking my vote of her.

Quick, someone tell me how the other candidates feel about teacher's pay because I'm too lazy.

Nevermind, I found out. OK I'm voting for Purdue.

"McCrory thinks that we should treat our schools like a business, and therefore pay teachers as the market would – since we have a great need for science and math teachers, people willing to teach math and science should demand a high salary, as should teachers willing to work in schools in lower-income areas."

VS

What? That is silly...punish the English teachers? It should have nothing to do with what's 'hot' or 'not' on the scholastic market....whatever the fuck that is.

Tell us then - how do you propose to get high-need staff, like teachers in Math & Science and teachers in areas ordinarily difficult to staff? Conscription?

Kainen,

Hate to say it, but people with a knowledge of math and science have many more job opportunities than English or History majors. If you want to attract those people away from other jobs, you will have to offer higher salaries.

You may not like it but that's just the way things are. Wishing away prices, and the fundamental scarcities they reflect, is not a good way to set policy.

I'm not proposing anything...I just want my english teaching wife to get a little relief. lol.

They pay her peanuts, absolute peanuts....and I'm afraid that won't change at all if McCrory only wants to take care of science and math teachers.

I know I have the blinders on with this issue, and it's just one damn issue, haha, but my vote at this time doesn't care. I can admit that.

Well look - the issue of whether or not teacher base pay is essentially irrelevant to the issue of attracting high-needs teachers. Which, as it is, means if you want math & science teachers, you need to pay more.

Socks`` already pointed out the relevant issue - there's more competition for these teachers outside the education field. And, like it or not, there tends to be an oversupply of liberal arts majors - which means these positions tend to go unfilled much less frequently.

Well that's not relevant to what I'm trying to get at , I think [all] teachers deserve a pay raise some more than others is OK...Bev Purdue is pretty open laying out that plan across the board. However, the only bit I've read about McCrory is that he is for only increasing 'high demand' teachers like math and science. What is his stance for everyone else?

Government employee salaries are discussed in the latest debate, including a plan to increase the pay of Highway Patrol officers but not teachers.

It's a shame that Munger can only hope for 6% of the vote at best.

My girlfriend got a mail-in ballot and researched the heck out of each candidate. She voted for Munger, then was all sad when she found out he is only polling at like 3%
