My goal is to be able to run almost all of it.

That's rather sad

<3<3<3<3

Do it with me. Britta's gonna be out of town, misha hates running, matt won't even consider running, my mom and other friend are like 'maybe', and ...that's it for the 'people who might do this with me' pool

Shockingly, I'm actually pretty easily intimated by the combination of new activity/place + lots of people. One or the other is fine...but together, not so much

C'mon, guy

I've heard stories of you huffing and puffing around the tennis court

You're not allowed to roll in a 5K, you know?

^^Clearly, you don't fully get the point of setting goals that are slightly unreasonable.

^I, too, am skeptical...so thanks for calling him out for me

Oh, do it!

It's a walk/run, which means that anyone under 300lbs won't finish last

Nerdchick keeps trying to get me to do the triangle triathlon. it's a 5K, 800yd? m? swim, and 15mi bike. I could do that tonight...but I'd be among the very last to finish The run is flat; she said the biking is pretty hilly.

I think if I signed up for next year's, it'd be too far out for me to stay motivated, you know?

But man, go for it!

ambrosia, i think rd is trying to encourage you by saying you cant do it. hes thinking it will motivate you more

5k is easy!! start small and work your way up, only stop running when you feel like you really might honestly pass out. you'd be surprised how far you can go

i found that once i found a comfortable running speed, the rest was gravy

how long can you run right now without stopping? i have a 5 weeks to a 5k training guide in a fitness magazine i can scan in for you!

^I don't know, honestly. I quite enjoy just zoning out on the elliptical and stationary bike at the Y; for outside, I've been biking with my mom, so it's been at least two or three weeks since I ran

Is it just an accelerated version of this?

yea it sounds cool! the only thing i'd be scared of is the biking. i mean that is a long bike ride. i like the swimming and running part. and i like biking but that is just a LOT of biking. maybe i should just stick to swimming ha. baby steps, baby steps. i just haven't ridden a bike that wasn't a stationary bike at the gym in YEARS. a few summers ago like after my freshman year maybe i went through this bike riding phase. but haven't really touched my bike since.

OH and i meant to respond to the part about signing up a year in advance...i understand that. i'd never be able to stay motivated and then like 2 weeks before i'd probably be like "oh shit i should probably workout"

khcadwal, biking is sooooooo easy.

I hadn't ridden in ~6yrs, and I hopped on and did 5ish? miles without a problem (other than being wobbly ).

I am actually gonna have to start biking with my dad soon (used to bike 20mi each way to and from work when we lived in texas; has begun biking again recently, and is turning back into a bike fiend) because I'm forever leaving my mother behind.

15mi on a bike is a lot easier than you think!

i did 22.5 last october in wisconsin. yeah i stopped every 2 miles at a bar for a beer but whatever, i finished.. at 11pm

in all seriousness, once you get used to switching speeds for hills you'll be good to go. make sure to build some leg muscles beforehand or you might actually not be able to stand afterwards

on flat ground, biking is as easy as walking. 15 miles is not far, most people can do that in like an hour. the Triangle Triathlon course was pretty hilly though so you want to practice some hills

advice:

Once you start it, don't quit. Doesn't matter if you're last (especially if this is your first one ever or first one in a long long time), when you finish it you'll be hurting a lil bit sure, but you'll feel great because you did finish it.

Did you already register?

I haven't registered yet because I can't afford the $20 registration fee.

I'm gonna call up and see if I can get it waived; otherwise, I probably won't participate, unless I can get someone to pony up the fee for me

ambrosia you'll do fine in the 5k. Running (on flat ground) isn't that bad at all. Just set a good pace.

I'm still recovering from knee surgery but I could go out right now and knock out a 5k in 30 minutes no problem.

That triangle triathlelon sounds like fun.
