162 miles... you should be able to make it to Raleigh on that much gas
..although that won't help you much either 9/26/2008 1:32:48 PM |

hey sumfoo1, I think we're doing the opposite this wknd. You from Charlotte to Raleigh, myself from Raleigh to Charlotte. There's plenty of gas up here so I think I'm in a better situation than you, and I do better than 18 mpg (yikes!) 9/26/2008 1:35:04 PM |

you'd save 30 miles going up 49..and i'd guess better gas mileage since you're driving a brick through air basically 9/26/2008 1:37:54 PM |

pat, you'll be able to find gas. center-city not so much, but its pretty good supply along the outer ring.
concord is out at several places suprisingly, which is why i'm glad i have a monsterous tank and nowhere to go really 9/26/2008 1:39:16 PM |

^he'd save 30 miles but get worse gas mileage. Taking the interstate over the back way I get about 3-4 mpg better. 26 compared to 30 9/26/2008 1:46:19 PM |

yeah, he'll find gas in asheboro..and i can't imagine him getting that much worse gas mileage going 60-65 vs going 80..esp with what he's driving
but anyways. 9/26/2008 1:48:58 PM |

It really depends on the time of day, and car you are driving.9/26/2008 1:49:32 PM |

either way you'll probably catch the bottle neck up near the speedway/concord area unless you leave later than 6:30. By that time 85/40 and 49/64 are about the same. If you want to stop early i'd suggest the Pilot at exit 63.
you should already know all this shit. you and i both did this for 4 years. 9/26/2008 1:50:37 PM |

^^^you encounter more stop and go traffic than you think, with all those lights in the small towns. I thought I got better mileage the back way until I tracked it a few times.

What in the world are you talking about? Given no traffic the interstate is faster every time.

the interstate is faster but if he is worried about gas 49/64 is a much better route imo. His route to clayton on 49/64 vs 85/40 will save him about 30 miles like you said. If he gets 18mpg on the highway, he could still afford to lose 3-4 mpg on 49/64 and use the same amount of gas because of the 30 mile difference in his favor. On top of that, he'll pass 20 something gas stations along the way between asheboro, siler city, and just random ones. Id be SHOCKED if several of them didnt have gas still. 9/26/2008 1:53:46 PM |

well actually from asheboro to charlotte its a lot faster.. ppl at work think going all the way out to 85 then to clt is faster and it's not at all.. hell i really don't believe it's faster going to raleigh either but haven't timed it so i don't know

yeah given no traffic, but back in 2003,2004 when there was construction between durham and raleigh and then construction in salisbury the 40/85 route was almost undriveable.
now its as smooth as ever. until the break ground on the 85 expansion in cabarrus county, then shit will hit the fan again 9/26/2008 1:54:09 PM |

^^last time I made the drive (with no traffic above average either way) the difference was less than 10 minutes. At that point its just preference. Given that driving on the interstate is a lot safer I guess its your better bet. 9/26/2008 1:56:40 PM |

depends on where your starting and end points are. my parents house is right off of 49 outside of charlotte and from there it is nearly a tie to take 49/64 all the way to raleigh vs driving 15-20 mins to 85 and then heading to raleigh.
