i am open to almost anything EXCEPT for cheesy-action-blowup movies and really bad formulaic movies.
if i had to list 3 favorites in no order they would be: requiem for a dream, the fountain, and the boondock saints.

really, i just want to discover new things. thanks!

how much patience do you have? how long is your attention span? there are a ton of older movies that are really great, but they're slow.

^^ lots of patience. as long as there is SOME kind of plot.
i watched the Diving Bell and the Butterfly sooooo if i got through that (and enjoyed it) i can get through anything.

also, i finally got around to watching V for Vendetta last night and i can now add that to my top 10 list. so rad.

cocaine cowboys and cocaine cowboys II.

They're not action flicks but documentaries about the coke smuggling/dealing scene in the '80's
then the crack scene in the '90's.
They are all connected. If you are thinking scarface....that falls well short.
The truth in this case is stranger than fiction.

if you are a Werner Herzog fan, or even if you are not, you should check out the documentary Encounters at the End of the World. probably better to watch in HD and/or on a large expensive TV. it is a fabulous documentary though, and Herzog is a great narrator!

"Celebrated documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog takes you on a wild and woolly journey to the South Pole, from the National Science Foundation's headquarters on Ross Island to some of Antarctica's most remote and dangerous terrain. With a keen eye for the wonders and sometimes hilarious peculiarities of this icy land's animal and human inhabitants, Herzog offers an astounding look at the world's most inhospitable landscape."

^ I watched Planet Terror last night and really enjoyed it. It had lots of action and gore. It is basically a well done B-movie. You have to accept the fact that it's going to have some ridiculous scenes and enjoy it for what it is.

They just added a ton of movies to Watch Instantly.

I think Netflix made a deal with Starz, there are actually some decent (and even recent) movies to watch online.

Ex: I think No Country for Old Men is online now.

alright my boss at the lab (who is a big deadwood and mst3k fan) has recommended i start watching "Jericho"
i read the description and was imediately turned on.
so now season one, disc 1 is the first on my queue

and he also let me and codes borrow "Black Sheep" not the one with chris farley and david spade. but the "horror" (its kinda like a horror-comedy) directed by jonathan king.
it's honestly one of our favorite movies now.

rent the show Damages. I got the first disc last weekend and thought it was amazing. Also, start the Wire if you haven't seen it yet.

For anyone who likes crime movies here are some good ones:
In the Name of the Father (great Daniel Day Lewis flick about the troubles in Ireland)
Maria Full of Grace
Layer Cake
Miller's Crossing (probably my favorite Coen Brothers film)
Chopper
The Bank Job
Gotti (surprisingly good HBO film with like half the cast of The Sopranos in it)

me and codes just watched the first disc of jericho.
we're hooked. seriously obsessed.

hes in the back room scrambling right now trying to find a cord so we can hook the computer to the tv and we can take advantage of the instant play.
it's a lot like lost but without the stupid nonsensical crap (ie polar bears, the reoccurring numbers etc etc). sorry i know there are eleventy billion lost fans out there, im not one....to each his own right
there are a few instances where it is a bit unrealistic but it doesnt take away from the show that much.

so far my boss is at 100% on dvd suggestions. (and there have been a lot)

twin peaks is great, although it kinda falls off in season 2, and things don't ever really wrap up (and i understand the film is pretty bad)

but i love, love, love agent dale cooper

How do you feel about documentaries and ancient life/warfare?

The Terry Jones (from monty python) documentaries are awesome and entertaining, and dispel tons of myths about the periods they cover.

I recommend starting with Medieval Lives, then watching Barbarians.

i know it's old, but the constant gardener was incredibly eye opening. i had no idea what it was about, as the title gives you nothing, so it was a shocker to find that it dealt with the shady happenings of pharmaceutical companies testing/issuing vaccinations to unsuspecting africans.
it just helped to solidify my hatred for drug companies. hate hate hate

speaking of rachel weiss (?), if you haven't seen the fountain you should probably go get it right now. stick with it-- it's a little difficult to take in all at once. highly recommended for nice, big hd tvs
