The banks let them 'cause they just sold off the loans right when they made them. So they just wanted to make all the loans they could, since they didn't have to worry about whether they got paid or not.
That being said, I'll take a bailout any day 9/29/2008 10:45:25 AM |

I imagine some people were like us who were able to afford their houses when they bought them, but then life happened. My husband and I lost my income, we saw a significant reduction in overtime and bonuses that make up a portion of his income, and then you add in our son's medical expenses that have eaten away at our savings and earnings. . .it puts us in a damned difficult situation. And I know that we are not the only ones.9/29/2008 2:52:49 PM |

^^^ that's a valid point, and you're right...i wonder what percentage of those defaulting on their mortgages come from circumstances like that, or those who borrowed above their means, or borrowed RIGHT AT the max

I think that you might be surprised at the stories of the people out there in tight financial spots.
And we are still in our house, btw. I just don't know how long we're going to be able to make ends meet like this. 9/29/2008 3:12:27 PM |

Now we get to be the old relative who tells about how he lived through the Second Great Depression. And to think, I was afraid I'd get old and not have scary stories to tell my grandkids! 9/29/2008 3:19:18 PM |

My parents have had a couple of neighbors who moved into the houses next door, and had to move out within a year or two. Not that the houses are that high up on the food chain, but these people were living above their means and had loans where the rates could change (I'm not sure if that's the right term). House payments got too high and the bank foreclosed on the houses. 9/29/2008 8:09:23 PM |
