Roasted duck from chinatown on xmas

I win!

Seriously. Xmas was the only day my parents had off from work back when they worked 2 (sometimes 3) jobs each trying to get out of the ghetto.
My parents, aunt, grandma, cousin, my sister, and I would pile into our 1981 toyota corolla and drive up to chinatown in washington dc to go to all the chinese shops and buy chinese food.

[Edited on September 29, 2008 at 11:26 PM. Reason : I miss that lil toyota. BTW, we finally got a piece of the pie ]

the stuffing--i will always remember the stuffing.

how we fight over it, how my dad will hide a stash immediately to have to himself later, how the stuffing is and will always be better than the dressing (even if you smother it with gravy), how we started making extra to make sure everyone had a bit of leftovers, how it smells, the simplicity of it, helping prepare it, helping scrape it out of the turkey as we pick off pieces of turkey, and the crumpled, ink stained, hand written recipe by my Nana.

Christmas Pudding

I hated that shit but my parents thought that me and my brother loved it for some reason so they had it every year. And every year we told them we hated it.

btw, you know what it is, right? it is just seaweed extract. it has no taste of it own. it comes as dry strips/sheets, which are boiled in water, then milk, sugar, flavourings, cut fruit, etc are added (can be made without milk, but it is far tastier with milk). then you can pour it into fancy molds if you desire, or just into one rectangular baking dish. then cut up into cubes and eat! (or invert out from the fancy molds) although it doesn't really have its own flavour, its texture does give it "taste". and yeah, people add food coloring to make it look attractive, but i don't. if you like jello, this is jello X 100!

talking of that, i need to make some soon!

oh, and it is good for you!

p.s. it has been used as a food ingredient for far far far longer than as a substrate in labs.

^ HOW CAN HATE IT??? THAT SHIT IS THE SHIT!

Thanksgiving was always at my aunt and uncle's house, and everyone in the family had one specific thing to bring every year. But it was pretty standard stuff - turkey, rolls, stuffing, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, etc.

Christmas was always at our house, and I made it pretty much since I was ~12, and it was usually very different stuff from year to year, except my parents always got a honey baked ham and a few of their smoked turkey breasts. My mom went through a few years of a Waldorf salad kick. My uncle always brought a Waffle House chocolate pie, because he loves them.

Every Christmas, we eat baked ziti. Some kind of green--asparagus, broc, or green beans. And maybe some garlic bread. But it's normally all about the ziti and the homemade sauce. Christmas is the time of year we make all the stews and sauces to freeze and have through Winter.

I see some similarities in here.

We usually get/cook pizza on Christmas Eve since we're all busy wrapping or putting presents under the tree. That might change this year since everybody is broke as hell.

Christmas day we have eggs, bacon, cinammon rolls, and danish orange rolls for breakfast. I forget but I think we do a sort of buffet style lunch with some nice party trays (fruit, meat, cheese, and a bunch of nice sandwich breads). Makes it easy.

Thanksgiving is usually pretty consistent:
Honey baked ham
Turkey
Stuffing
Rolls
Cranberry Sauce
Um, some other stuff...
My sis-in-law bakes pies for thanksgiving/holidays now too.
I also have recently added my whip-ass corn bread to the mix. Totally effin delicious.

Deviled eggs
Cranberry sauce
Turkey
Mashed potatoes
Pumpkin pie

I guess all the normal stuff. For me, the big deal was where the holiday was being held. My mom's, my dad's, my grandparent's, my step-grandparent's. Someone make a thread on family dysfunction.

We always make an effort to have cheesecake on Thanksgiving (along with standards like turkey, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce, etc), but I have no idea why.

Christmas with my dad's family is all about some green beans, ham, deviled eggs and homemade candy/sweets (peanut brittle, toffee, chocolate clusters, those ritz things with peanut butter and white chocolate).
