So this morning I was pulled over:

Cop: "Do you realize you cut that woman off back there?"
Me: "I checked my mirrors and had on my turn signal before changing lanes, there should have been plenty of room."
Cop: "She had to slam her brakes and hit her horn as not to hit you"
Me: "I checked twice and moved after the vehicle in front of her made a left turn onto Ray St. She had to slow down for that vehicle to turn and after the intersection there was plenty of room between us."
Cop: "I was behind you, I saw the whole thing"
Me: "I know, I wouldn't have cut off an elderly woman, especially with an officer behind me. I was doing 32 MPH due to the hill, I knew she was accelerating but we were all approaching the red light at East St, where I was going to make my left."
Cop: "License and registration"

* Fifteen minutes pass *

Cop: "Here's your license and registration. You've been charged with changing lanes in an unsafe manner. In addition, you've also been charged with operating a vehicle with an unsigned registration. Sir do you realize that is a Class II misdemeanor?"
Me: "No officer I did not, would you like me to sign it now?"
Cop: "You should sign it before moving your vehicle, however the ticket has already been issued. Do you know where the Wake County Courthouse is?"
Me: "Yes sir, I work across the street."
Cop: "Do you have any further questions?"
Me: "Why do you think I would cut off an elderly black woman in front of a cop, because it just sounds silly to me. Doesn't matter, I'll hear your reply in court."
Cop: *Huffs and returns to his patrol car*

By the by, the officer's name is:

Officer R W Wyrick, JR
No. 2914
of the Raleigh Police Department

Patrol Car 158

-------------------------------------------------------
Anybody happen to know the insurance points for:
G.S. 20-146(D)(1) - Unsafe changing of lanes
G.S. 20-57(C) - Operating a motor vehicle with an unsigned registration

Also looking for an inexpensive lawyer, I hate court.

lawyer: James Crouch.

He'll treat you right and make sure that you get off. you won't get anything on your record and he'll make the cop look like an asshole. good lawyer and if you're not in the wrong and are being mau-maued then he'll charge you fairly.

Also note, I was pulled back in March for speeding, which was dismissed, the same registration card (obviously still unsigned).

I currently have NO points on my license and the worst thing tied to me is a $25 parking ticket I got three weeks ago.

By the way, I gently changed lanes, no wheel jerk or anything crazy.

This is my morning commute, I know it like the back of my hand, I also drive in the middle lane until I make the left onto East St from Edenton St.

It is just funny because I described the scene perfectly (by the way, it was an SUV, most likely a Honda CRV that turned onto Ray St.) and I had an idea that the woman was accelerating fast BUT there was over a car length between our bumpers and she was accelerating from almost a dead stop, I was moving at a steady 32 MPH. When I changed lanes immediately after Ray St. she only would have had to slam her brakes if I hadn't kept my speed, which I did.

that's some bs he gave you a ticket for unsigned registration; I'd almost be certain that will get tossed by presenting signed registration in court.

How expensive is James Couch?

The cop made sure to scan a copy of my unsigned registration. He's a young cop and will most likely show up in court. This is why I want to hire a lawyer, if I can get James Couch for an inexpensive rate and he'll make Officer R W Wyrick, JR look like the jerk he was, I'd appreciate it.

Lawyers are usually always cheaper than the amount you'll pay because of higher insurance rates over X amount of time.

Trust me, I know it is ALWAYS better to get a lawyer.

Had this been an older cop, I would just go to court myself since he would most likely not show up.

However, it being a young cop, and one that was bound and determined to write me a ticket, I want a lawyer to go and fight this battle for me.

^^i beg to differ. i've had to go see him twice, and both times the price he quoted me was less than other lawyers in the area whom i researched. his prices are right there with everyone else, and on occasion he is cheaper. i'd say he is inexpensive, respectively.

i had to get a lawyer b/c a cop lied about my speed when writing a ticket.

hired crouch. in car camera didn't coincide with his statement. no punishment for him. cost me ~$300, no ticket.

what pissed me off the most was his bullshit about "it's your god given right to contest". i said "you're damned right i will". i asked him why he would mention god, when he was obviously lying just to write me a ticket, he walked away.

people who wouldn't be able to afford lawyers would be screwed. wtf.

assholes.

Yeah, when given the choice between a cop or a driver, the cop wins.

The only thing that would get you over a cop is having a witness in the vehicle, and even then it could be a stretch.

What I love the most about our judicial system is that no matter what, even if found innocent you have to pay the court fees. Such BS, I think the cop that wrote the bogus ticket should have to pay them, but that's a bitter and angry driver responding.

i agree, but it was you who took it to the level of bribing and asserted that otherwise he wouldn't get off. crooked doesn't necessarily always mean case by case bribes.

i've had James Crouch represent me on a few occasions. he's not really expensive...pretty much standard rate for a traffic lawyer.

Quote :
"oh, i have no doubt that there are crooked DAs and judges. but, they're the exception and unless they're idiots they're not going to take a $100 bribe over a traffic citation

"

that's not how it works, dude. the lawyer will usually get it greatly reduced or thrown out...a lot of what's going on is that the lawyer is a hired pain-in-the-ass and the court would rather just settle for something like a $50 fine for some little city code violation than waste time fighting. the extra money they'd get just isn't worth it.

[Edited on October 2, 2008 at 2:29 PM. Reason : the unsigned registration is as good as gone, with or without a lawyer. don't even worry about that one.]

[Edited on October 2, 2008 at 2:30 PM. Reason : i bet the other will either go away or get reduced to a minor city code violation with small fine.]
