Bird influenza? I hear it's supposed to hit this year. Let me know if you die so I can better prepare myself.

My brother got the flu shot last year, but still ended up getting it twice. Both times he got one of the strains not in the shot.

Sweet Jesus Bryan, I swear you get sick more than anyone I know. Err, I guess that just applies to when you were in NC though.

I can't remember the last time I got either the flu or the flu shot.

^ it was. I've used one sick day in 2 years out here and that was sort of BS (it was during the playoffs in 2006 and the Mets had a late afternoon game).

I went to work in any case today...

^I'm just glad that when we were roomies I never got sick from you. I think its all this damn pollen in the air here man. Its just the fall but this stuff's still been kicking my ass every once in a while.

I can't remember the last time I used a sick day for something other than being hungover. (and don't say anything about that time I skipped out on work at HBH!)

are flu shots good or bad? thoughts? i'm serious. we get free ones at school so i'm trying to decide what i want to do.
(and i know they are just a guess and you can still get the flu because what if it isn't the right strain, etc)

^ that is what i thought but then everyone started telling me that was stupid. and i don't know i'm not a doctor or a biologist or a nurse. i don't know these things! i was pretty sure i was against flu shots but then people at school were like "that's dumb"

and since i care so deeply about what everyone else does, i wanted to know if i should do it too.

I suggest maintaining good hygiene and keeping your body (specifically your immune system) in top shape.

fuck a flu shot.

^^ i know, i agree. and rarely get sick but with law school my immune system def takes a beating because i'm always stressed/tired. so last year i got really sick but it wasn't the flu so obvi a shot wouldn't have helped.

^ will you explain the flu shot mystery to me. i hear one thing then i hear another. what is the TRUTH! haha

I'd probably be feeling better if not for my 18 hour days during the week what with work and school. Get up at 6am go to bed at 12am. Fun times... Definitely going to sleep/watch college football for like 36 hours straight after work today.

^ i know right. i've gotten sick more in grad school than like my entire life. well i know yours is harder because you have a real job. but i have 6 or 8 hours of class a day followed by a job, that i don't get paid for. so i still work. it just isn't as "real." you definitely win. i'm just saying, i feel your pain. like a lot.

uber long days not good for the body.

It sucks... but I actually got sick more in NC than I do now. This is the first time in like 2 years I've had the flu (i had like a stomach bug a few months ago but that was nothing big)...

Probably because I'm more active (gym and whatnot).

-------

I will say my life pretty much sucks right now though. School/work/school/work/school/work. But I'm moving to NC again next summer and I don't plan on looking for a job until fall.. Yay me.

"According to the state, “this year’s flu shot was not the best match for some of the flu strains circulating this year.” That problem is not unique to Massachusetts, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which have to predict what flu strains to cover, missed on two out of three this year. “That guess is made by mid-summer in the Northern Hemisphere and vaccine production is based on these projections. Flu mutates frequently and as new strains emerge we must prepare new vaccines,” says Dr. Jim Wilde, professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Wilde, who has a long standing interest in influenza and has published numerous articles based on his research, tells Infection Protection, “there is a worldwide network of people who monitor for the emergence of new strains of flu. Wrong guesses occur every few years. This year they guessed wrong on the B strain and on one of the A strains.”"

^^i don't even have time to go to the gym when do you go? i wake up at 6:30 and go to school until 1 or 2. then i go to my internship do a bunch of shit until like 6. come home, kill myself, start my homework that i never finish and usually just quit at like 12 if i'm not done because i NEED at least a little sleep. i guess i could wake up at like 5:30 instead but dear god. i'm just not strong enough! i was thinking about going after my internship since usually when i get home from that i kind of lay around until like 7 before i actually force myself to do work. maybe if i went and worked out i'd feel more energized to knock out some stuff.

^ interesting where was that info from? i just am clueless and the shots are free so i didn't know. i am always wary of shots and vaccines. i don't know why. like if i have kids i'm not going to get them the chicken pox vaccine. i'm just going to be like "oh look there's little tommy he has the chicken pox, go help him pick his scabs." i mean that is what my mom did, and i feel like my immune system is (for the most part) pretty baller

i just got the flu too. i feel like dying. i got innoculations in the Army awhile back and i've been sick maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 5-6 years.

i'm dying now. how long does the flu last ? medicine, halls, and tea isn't helping. soup is good though. it fills me up. can't eat anything solid and i'm not considering smoking any weed.

is blow good for the flu ?

I go to the gym before work (which is why I leave at 6am) and usually go for a shortish run on my lunch break since we have showers in my office complex. I couldn't survive unless I blew off steam doing that for real...

Honestly, I gave up caffeine and I feel much more awake now that I get up in the AM and do something. Of course as soon as I get out of class and start to drive home I feel like I'm going to end up driving in to a ditch...

^ I'm drinking tea like non stop at work today. Just have to make it through 3pm today...

V yeah, I wouldn't argue with that. I don't even know what some of those words mean...

So how does that, in any way, mean that the "flu shot is the reason the virus is mutating"

You have no clue what you are talking about.

The flu shot usually compromises 3 different serotypes that are predicted to be the most widespread in a given year. If they guess wrong, it jut means that a given serotype wasn't predicted to be strong that year, not that the vaccine caused it to mutate... jesus.

The influenza virus is a ssRNA virus and the RNA polymerase that replicates it has no error checking, thus it is subject to a vast amount of antigenic drift.

Nah I've just heard that the virus will mutate to continue it's survival. Kinda like the jargon that we're creating the superbug due to overvaccinating, IS THAT TRUE?

Anyway, I've never had the flu shot and I've been fine. Stay clean, keep away from sick people, and let your immune system do the job.

I always get one of the free student health flu shots, and I've never had the flu AND never gotten 'sick' from receiving a flu shot. ::knock on wood:: The shots they give contain 'dead' flu virus anyway, it can't give you the real flu. Now some other vaccination methods contain weakened live virus, but not the regular shot.

I think people getting sick from the shot is either an allergic reaction to the delivery method or just hypochondria.

As for getting it or not, most people won't get the flu regardless if they maintain good health habits, (wash hands, good sleep, eat well and all that) but I don't see any problem in a little extra insurance b/c getting hit hard for a week can really kick your ass if you're in the middle of crunch time during the semester.

Some of us don't get enough sleep and it's beyond our control.

Though I am leaving work now and plan on making up for lost sleep this weekend (I know you can't technically do that, but I'm going to try!)

i have a problem with the first statement in this quote--the virus will mutate enough on its own to ensure survival, but we are speeding up the mutation process with vaccines and we will eventually encounter a superbug much sooner than we would without vaccines.

i don't get flu shots for that reason.
