or did you get them pulled out?
I have gotten 3 in with one of them being partially in. Now that one i believe is fully coming in and its very painful. I am debating on going to the dentist but i am afraid they'll just give me some pain meds. and that's it. 10/6/2008 2:34:07 PM |

i only had 2, but i got them cut out before they started coming through. it hurt for a few days, and then a piece of "debris" got stuck in the hole which was very painful but after i got that cleaned out it was fine.
do they knock you out when they pull them? i say fuck that, cut those things out while you can so you don't have to be conscious for it. 10/6/2008 2:37:18 PM |

1. go have them looked at 2. have an oral surgeon remove them (paid for by parents health insurance) 3....... 4. profit

There was only one time that my wisdom teeth gave me any problems. The back of my right lower jaw was sore behind my molars and I was chewing gum because it was making it feel better. Then all of a sudden the skin ripped and blood started filling my mouth. I started spitting it out as I was walking to Dabney for Chem 101. It quit bleeding by the time I got to class and it felt a lot better. I was already scheduled to get them removed over x-mas break so after that semester was over, they were yanked out. The week or two following the removal sucked. Everything was fine after a month or two though. 10/6/2008 2:38:01 PM |

Doc tried to pull one of mine out by hand but I have teeth of steel and it wouldn't come out. They dont bother me and my mouth has plenty of room so I ended up leaving them in. You just gotta make sure you clean back there. 10/6/2008 2:39:03 PM |

Short version: I think its a good idea to get wisdom teeth removed, I had mine removed, the dental surgery isn't particularly painful, it is the recovery time that can suck, but it isn't so bad if you plan for it properly
---
Words version: As far wisdom teeth go, in my personal experience as well as that of friends and family, dentists almost always recommend pull. For example, my mother who recently saw a dentist in Cary, who has had her wisdom teeth all her life, was recently advised to have them removed even though they rarely cause her pain. My dentist told me if you are ever going to do it, do it between the ages of 18 to 24 because your mouth will heal the fastest/best then.
Mine started coming in, 2 coming in fairly straight, and 2 not so straight, but I went ahead and had them pull all 4 (as they recommended) rather than risk having to go through that process again. They told me even those straight ones could become problems later on.
The actually dental surgery wasn't all that painful, under all those drugs, it was the recouping time that was the worst, and all the meds/antibiotics tore up my stomach pretty bad (combined with the change in diet while I was healing).
All in all, I'm glad I did it, I'm glad I did it while I was young, and I'm glad I'll never have to go through it again.
A good starting point would be to get dental x-rays and see just how straight they are, and which if any have a chance of becoming impacted. Some people seem to bounce back from dental surgery right away, but I'd schedule a week off of work, and a significant other or family member to hang out with you for the first day or two because if you get all 4 out at once eating won't be much fun. 10/6/2008 2:45:06 PM |

you should at least go to a dentist, if they aren't coming in right they can push all your teeth out of line, then you will either need to get braces/aligners or just have crooked teeth for life. It doesn't happen every time, but it would suck if it did. Unless you have no insurance and no money i would have it looked at. 10/6/2008 2:50:39 PM |

i had mine removed last summer before they started coming in. It was a pretty terrible experience for me, but a lot of that had to do with the fact that I got the pill version of morphine for pain medication and I didn't know that I was allergic to it until then.. 10/6/2008 2:53:24 PM |

I got mine pulled
after I already had about 10 or 12 baby teeth (they just wouldn't come out) removed and 2 adult teeth cut out
needless to say, by the time I got my wisdom teeth out, I was pretty used to the process
it's not so bad... plus mine were so impacted that they really did have to take them out anyway 10/6/2008 3:01:22 PM |

I think its partially that they want the money, but also partially due to the fact that it's more difficult to thoroughly clean them which can cause some trouble down the road. If they come in pain free and you have enough room for them, just be extra prudent about cleaning them and you should be OK.10/6/2008 3:07:41 PM |

FTW.
I had mine taken out about five years ago. IV knocked me out. I woke up what seemed like a second later, it was one, and I had good drugs to boot. I had no real pain or sickness afterward. It was more annoyance at not really being able to eat what I want when I wanted.
With all the gauze in my mouth and the drugs after the surgery, I apparently tried to make my parents an offer they couldn't refuse in the car on the way home.

Got mine removed. Came home wrote my paper that was due 3 hours after my surgery, and I was eating bacon-cheeseburgers the next day. It's not bad at all.

same thing happened to my mom--she was 40 when they told her she needed to have them out and could not give her a reason other than they might give her problems in the future. they also told her she'd probably be left with permanent numbness in some parts of her face bc of having it done so late..
she told the dentist to go to hell--10 years later she still hasn't had a problem with them and never went back to that dentist. dentist told me i need to have them taken out even though all of them are in and have plenty of room. i told them no.10/6/2008 9:28:14 PM |

I had two impacted in my upper jaw and two that could be cut out and pulled in my lower jaw. I was knocked out entirely, all four were taken out. I was 15.
I partially woke up during the surgery and was able to remember some of the distant pain of them chipping the teeth out of my upper jaw. Luckily I fell back asleep pretty quickly there, I remember feeling towels on my face (which was nice, kind of comfy).
I got home, still numbed pretty well, but they do a top notch job with the surgery so there was a lot of blood in my stomach. Threw up a lot of blood and then laid back down and passed out for many hours. Couldn't eat anything solid for a week and just used ibuprofen to control the pain/swelling. Head hurt for about ten to twelve days. I was up and walking around after the first day but I was sleeping a lot more than before. Kept my activity levels pretty low because knocking my head around would cause a throbbing pain.
Pain wasn't totally awful. It's worth the trouble to get the surgery done because otherwise you are going to wish you were fucking dead when they really start to give you trouble (like the one of mine that came in sideways, luckily it only was pushing for a few weeks and we had already set up the surgery date).
My other advice is not to go to a dentist but to go to an oral surgeon. They tend to do more complex stuff. Getting your wisdom teeth out is complex. While mine was a little messy, a lot of the problems were more due to my age and the nature of the teeth coming in. 10/6/2008 9:34:38 PM |

I am trying not to go... Its painful but i think its just from it breaking the gum in the back half. I do NOT want them removed if they don't need to be. my other 2 are in w/o problems. One is still hiding. My dad never got his removed and he is still fine. I believe I do have the space for all of them to come in. its not pain against other teeth. just the gum. I am just wondering how long it will be for it to fully come up or the gum to recede/ go away.

If you think you don't need it then just get regular X-rays to monitor their emergence. If they start to come in at an angle, get them out. If they stay impacted, get them out.
They also are more likely to get cavities and other shit anyway (I think) so they aren't exactly valuable teeth to keep. 10/6/2008 10:20:13 PM |

Get them pulled! I thought I had plenty of room, I've never had any pain with my wisdom teeth (still have them). However, they have caused my entire teeth to shift ruining the four years of braces I had as a kid. If I would've had them pulled in H.S. then my teeth wouldn't be as crooked as they are now. I really don't have any reason to have them pulled now, damaged is already done. 10/6/2008 10:42:07 PM |

If it's hurting you just get it out, really not a huge deal considering most people get them out at some point. Don't try to just take the pain because it might be impacting worse over time or growing into your jawbone or a number of things10/6/2008 10:43:56 PM |

yeah, really. get them taken out, and unless you're weird about going to sleep, 99% of the time you should.
these are standard procedures for most surgeons, and btw, goto an oral surgeon, dont let your dentist do this procedure (unless they've done hundreds). 10/6/2008 11:17:05 PM |

Three were out and one wasn't when I had them pulled. I felt so much better after they were gone. There wasn't really any pain, so I didn't need the pain killers. The one that had to be cut out was a little sore for a few days though. I took the knockout drugs and don't remember much about that day.

GoldenGirl don't be stupid, get them taken out! Use an Oral Surgeon. There's a high probability that they will cause some sort of problem in your life. Have them taken out while you're young and recovery is easy. I had all four of mine CUT out from below the gum line when I was 18. Since they hadn't emerged yet it was more invasive but I'd still do it a million times over.

^That's because the roots grow around your nerves and cause damage that you may never recover from when they are removed. If you are in your mid-20's they haven't developed that much yet, so there more than likely won't be any nerve damage.
