this argument just doesn't make sense. Artists have been signed to corporate labels and gone by general popularity for a very long time. If you are going to discredit todays top music as not being todays top music then you are also going to discredit the Elvi, beatles and pretty much everyone since the 20s.

If you are going to discredit todays top music by simply arguing that all music today is just not good then you have a valid argument but you're still not necessarily correct and I'd like to ask you. Why do you think all humans lost their level of creativity and ability to create good art?

you said discredit way too many times

what the fuck are "the Elvi"

the first sentence in the second paragraph makes me want to eviscerate my own eyeballs and beat you senseless with them

but most importantly, the only people that say this are the people that don't know where to find real music. stop talking to people that go to g105 and 96rock for "the good shit" and you'll stop hearing this "argument"

music today is mostly bad because it is heavily influenced on the single and not the album experiance.

Mass media also has bands rise to the fore front too quickly without being extreamly skilled because one particular pop rock hit fell out of their ass.

I'm more or less referring to the rock genre because it is what I know best. Most of the rock bands before the information and technological boom earned their stripes. Today fast communication and mass media brings crappy bands up way too quickly before the truely learn their instruments, how to put their emotion into it and time to really solidify a band into an experiance with solid meaningful songs.

Maybe the large death of the guitar solo is partly to blame as well.

My 2 c.

Seriously though, in today's musical culture, there are tons of independent artists and a vast number of ways to access their media. This thread sucked.

The difference between the record industry of yesterday versus the record industry of today is the control that they have over their artists.

Elvis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc. were artists first. The record companies saw their potential and chose them for what they were. They put out records and sold a ton. As long as they sold records they were free to do just about whatever they wanted. They lived crazy lives and it was reflected in their music.

Fast forward to today. Our "artists" are practically owned by the record labels. They have less creative control than ever. They buy their songs. If a band member is having trouble in the studio the label brings in a session player to to play the part on the recording. The label controls what they wear and how they wear it. They make them work with personal trainers and dietitians. If the "artist" doesn't like it too bad; there are plenty of people waiting in line to take their place. They're musical whores at best and the quality of the music reflects that.

It's no surprise that the major labels are putting out such crap. Their artists have no integrity. They practically nailed their own coffin shut. The only good thing to come out of it is that they created a void for independent labels to fill. In the mid 90's very few independent labels could even turn a profit. Now there are tons of them that are making their owners very wealthy. Thx big record labels for making that happen.

but if you think the people on the radio aren't the best then you either think

A. Record companies don't want to make as much money as possible

B. The artists you speak of don't want to become popular and don't like money

a2. since record companies don't want to make money then people like elvis, beatles, etc basically all popular groups in american history were not the best of their time

Quote :
"stop talking to people that go to g105 and 96rock for "the good shit" and you'll stop hearing this "argument""

96rock and g105 don't want to make money. mtv doesn't want to make money either.

capitalism hasn't made it to the music industry

again skack. why do the companies do this? are they trying to make sure they don't make themselves too much money?

elvi is obviously elvis plural

if this were somehow true they would just sign with another company that "allowed creativity" because they wanted to make money

[Edited on October 8, 2008 at 10:55 AM. Reason : but none of the companies want money. they are just in business to ruin the music industry]

They're out of touch. It's not that they don't want to make money, it's just that their tactics are fucking horrible. They put out shitty pop songs that nobody will want to hear 9 months from now. There is no longevity to it. I guarantee you The Beatles will outsell Pink in the year 2015. Put out a great record and it'll sell for decades. Put out a pop hit and everybody will be sick of it in a few months.

Why do you have so much faith in the record companies to make good decisions? If Wachovia, Lehman Bros, and Washington Mutual can fail due to their mistakes; what makes you think the record industry is run by such savvy individuals?

Quote :

Wrong. I'm saying that the record industry is signing shit artists that they can control over good artists that won't play their games. It's not that the artists were good and the record label made them suck...It's that they sucked to begin with and the record company loved them anyway.

The reason why I hate corporate music is that most chord progressions seem to be based off of Pachelbel's Canon in D. Also, contemporary music does not employ true thirds harmony, which is becoming increasingly important to me.
