So several sources are calling for a colder and wetter winter in the mid-east. Can't wait for some snow. I wish I lived in southern Montana right now for their 12-24" expected this weekend.

Quote :
"
From Accuweather (take it for what it is): December could be the roughest month of a colder and snowier winter that could finish with another cold spell in late January and February.

Ski resort operators in the northern Rockies and the Northwest will enjoy another season of abundant snow, although snow depths will not match last winter's record-setting snowpack.

I, too, hope we get some snow this year. Ice, not so much, but I'll take what I can get.

The is because I can see making a thread for this - for winter weather around here.
Montana? Not so much.
I'll be expecting updates to this thread (you know, on TWW, where a vast majority live in NC), every time Buffalo gets some snow. Keeping with the spirit of the first post. As well as for blizzards on the prairie.

Farmers' Almanac for southeast long range weather:
Quote :
"Winter will be cold, with temperatures two degrees below normal, on average. The coldest periods will occur in mid- and late December, mid-January, and early February. Precipitation will be near or slightly below normal in the north and well above normal in the south. Snowfall will be above normal in the west and below normal in most other locations. Higher elevations will have a Christmas snowfall, with other snowy periods in early January and in early and late February."

i wasn't suggesting that you did take it as fact.
But to take the Farmers' Almanac weather prediction as any more than a literal guess or more than a "fun fact", like a sunday newspaper horoscope, is to give it more credit than it deserves

The first of the winter forecasts are in, and they paint a bleak picture for snow-lovers in the Carolinas.

A leading national meteorologist and the government's own long-range forecasting agency both predict a very mild winter in the Southeast and for much of the United States. Dry weather also is predicted.

Joe Bastardi, well-known forecaster for Pennsylvania-based AccuWeather, says the winter heat will be centered over the Carolinas and the Tennessee Valley.

"December through February might be one of the top 10 warmest winters ever for the southeastern United States," Bastardi said.

Meanwhile, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says temperatures will be normal or above-normal in much of the United States and in Alaska. The Climate Prediction Center also says there is a strong chance of dry conditions in the Southeast.

Meteorologists say they think the months preceding and following winter -- November and March -- could be chilly. But the core months of December through February are likely to be quite mild.

Bastardi said the remarkable aspect of this winter will be its consistency.

"Unlike the winter of 2005-06 and last winter, where significant shots of cold and snow showed up in major areas ... this winter may have over 75 percent of the days above normal in most of the nation ..." Bastardi said in his annual winter forecast.

La Nina, a condition of cooler-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, will be responsible for the mild winter, forecasters agree. La Nina typically produces warm and dry weather in the Southwest and Southeast, and wet, chilly conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

Mike Halpert, of the Climate Prediction Center, said the La Nina condition is easing, but he said it usually takes several months before its impact lessens.

The forecast of dry weather is bad news for the Carolinas, still struggling to escape the impact of a drought in 2007 and early 2008. Hydrologists say winter precipitation is badly needed to replenish lakes and streams in the area.

While winter is expected to be mild, forecasters say spring's arrival won't be early.

"We are, in fact, predicting March to be normal to below normal for much of the nation," Bastardi said. "But for the core of the winter, this one looks like the warmest of the last three for much of the nation."

Weather Underground Email Service for Raleigh, NC

Special Weather Statement as of 12:16 PM EST on February 03, 2009

...Light rain expected to change to light snow from the northwest through
300 am...

A large area of light rain will continue to move northeast across
the region through 300 am. The rain will gradually become mixed
with... and change to light snow as the temperatures continue to
cool. The change to light snow will occur first across areas from
Hillsborough... Roxboro... and Rougemont around 100 am... then
reach near Pittsboro... Siler City... Raleigh... Henderson...
Louisburg... and Warrenton by 300 to 400 am.

Due to the warm ground... very little of the light snow will stick
initially. However... as the temperatures cool to around 32
degrees... there will be some light snow accumulations possible on
the grassy and elevated surfaces. There will be the possibility
of some slick spots on bridges and overpasses between 300 am and
daybreak. However... the back edge of the light precipitation
should rapidly exit our region during this time... limiting the
snowfall to only a dusting for most areas.

If the snow lasts longer than currently anticipated... a Winter
Weather Advisory may be issued by 300 or 400 am.

Early morning motorists should use extra caution.

230 PM EST Tue Feb 3 2009

...Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6 PM this evening to
12 PM EST Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for snow...which is in effect from 6 PM this
evening to 12 PM EST Wednesday.

A strong upper level disturbance and surface low moving into the
area from the northwest... combined with cold air in place... will
lead to the development of areas of snow over north central North
Carolina tonight into Wednesday morning.

Snow is expected to begin this evening around The Triad area and
spread eastward through the Triangle area... Smithfield... and the
Rocky Mount-Wilson area through tonight. There may be a lull in
the snow for several hours overnight... then additional snow bands
on the west side of the surface low are expected to cross this
area early Wednesday morning. The snow should taper off by noon
Wednesday. Storm total snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is
anticipated... and locally higher totals are possible.

In addition to the snow... brisk northwest winds may drop the wind
chill into the teens at times on Wednesday.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause
travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited
visibilities...and use caution while driving. People across north
central North Carolina should keep up with the very latest
conditions and forecasts from the National Weather Service.

Cincy was supposed to get 2" today, but has 7" and still counting! The system should spin through towards daybreak. A frenzied rush hour? Mayhaps!
