RR is a market right... is there anything else that is close to their speed without the price? I'm paying like $40 for RR Lite... RR is the only service I have with TWC now so no hope of price breaks from them, I believe.

What do you guys use?

I have wireless, ps3 and vonage so the Internet is a big deal....

rr normal is like 45 so you're gettin ripped.

Earthlink offers cable service over time warner's lines. Its kinda funky, but sometimes they have better prices. It would be identical to your current service, you just pay earthlink instead of timewarner.

DSL is garbage.

You can go to dslreports.com and they have a service provider finder that will find the isps in your local area + ratings and reviews.

^^ great link, thanks. For some reason it only pulled at&t, twc and satellite for me though.

There has to be a way to get 1.5 mbs for less than $35... right??

Change to RR lite and then wait a few weeks call back and ask for sales. They will give you full speed RR for the new customer price 34.99

I am admittedly ignorant to Embarq... can anyone speak on their experience with them?

Speeds what they claim?

network always seem to work?

pretty easy switch.. just swapping out the modem really?

This would not have any effects on my vonage right?

Well as far as Vonage goes - you will now have a TelCo connection to the house so see what packages they have.

I have not heard of anyone using DSL & Vonage together.

I was under the assumption that the main reason to get was Vonage was to take the TelCo out of the equation.

We used to have DSL with sprint -> embarq at my parents house. I guess we kept it for about two years before dumping them for RoadRunner. They all suck though. I pretty much hated DSL through embarq. The service seemed to be down frequently, and they never really cared to fix it in a timely manner. It definitely wasn't my equipment. I got a lot of bill credits from them - I'd call and complain every time it went out.

So, I'm back to getting it in the *** from TWC.... there really needs to be a better alternative or TWC will continue to jack their prices. Can anyone confirm my being incorrect about their new prices? How did you get a lower price?

I think the only real way to get the lowest price is to opt into their 2 year plan.

haha I got a letter yesterday about their plans all going up by $5, but only for people with RR service only. What a bunch of dicks.

^ ha, yeah.. I'm in that boat.

I called yesterday, told the guy I keep canceling everything they jack the price on and now I am down to just RR Lite. He said there truly was nothing he could do to the price but bumped me from the 1.5 to the 7.0 for the same price for one year.

he then told me to call back and see what the promotion is next month, I could then drop this promotion and say it was not meeting my expectations and get the RR Lite... then call back to get the new promotion if it was a better solution.

Since I have wireless, PS3, and Vonage the RR Lite could at times make my call reception bad so this will at least fix that, hopefully.

I ran a speed test on my PS3 (wireless connection). What speed would you think I would get? It was around 1400 which made me doubt my bump in speed happened, but then again the wireless I'm sure is making that slower, right?

the wireless is going to be faster than your rr connection, so unless you have bad signal your bandwidth bottleneck will still be your isp. If you haven't done it, you may want to just reboot the cable modem to make sure it grabs the new settings.

After that get on a computer and go to http://www.speedtest.net and run a test

I wish i had this at home :-P

I'm not ashamed to admit when I am ignorant on topics.... I'll bite.

I did reset the modem, vonage and wireless router. I did the speedtest on my ps3 shortly after and it was like 1400 kb/s and 350 for upload.

I will do it on my computer to see the difference in speed.

What I did not understand was, how could the wireless be faster than the cable to my computer?? I do have an old linksys router but I dont grasp the idea the wireless should be faster than if my ps3 were hooked to the router directly. sincerely, grasshopper?

802.11b operates at 11mbps 802.11g operates at 54mbps. Your time warner cable operates at 7mpbs which is theoretically slower than both. So the slowest link in the chain is time warner. However, if you are using 802.11b if you dont have really good signal you could see crappy speeds.

Even then you should still see speeds faster than 1.4mbps

^ winner, yeah I am using b. The signal is pretty good though... just one wall and its located in close proximity (25 feet maybe). I'll do another reset and test the computer tonight. Thanks for the clarification.

well, my computer was only getting at around 5,000... perhaps my vonage is making it slower (though nobody was on the phone, my ps3 was off... ) not sure what would cause it to be slower than the 7,000 claimed from TWC *O wait, its TWC*

5000 isn't too bad, but you should really get up around 6 or 7. The test sites on speedtest.net dont always have the best route to you, so you could try another site. Also, time warner does guarantee a 7k rate, so they may tell you theres nothing they can do. Dont tell them about the vonage or anything like that because they'll try to place blame there even though your vonage device is definitely not the problem here.

I would call them and let them know, but it may just be that time warner is shitty arround where you live :-(
