Indeed.

.2222... = 1 in Base 3
.3333... = 1 in Base 4
...
.FFFF... = 1 in Hex

sometimes when people don't belive it you can convince them with this

1/3 = .333.......

1/3 x 3 = 1 .3333.... x 3 = .9999....

unfortunately most people who cant grasp the first concept also don't grasp the concept of combining equations.

Plus .9999... defines the same Dedekind cut as 1, so they're both the same real number.

0.9999... = x
9.9999... = 10x

Subtract

9 = 9x
1 = x

Yet .999... is a real number whereas 1 is also a member of the natural numbers.

Debating myself in a math debate thread.

this would be more fun if someone would disagree, it feels like were just being a mob, a mob against people who dont know that .9 repeating is equal to one, im sad now

it's one i show in class when we discuss infinite geometric sums

.999... = = .9 + .09 + .009 + .0009 ...
first term = .9
common ratio = .1

sum =

first term
---------
1 - common ratio

so
.9
-- = 1
1-.1

or you do that shit where its like

.99999999*10

then you get like 9.999999 then you like divide it or something and it all cancels out and you get 1.

i forget exactly but what i do know is I'm walls1441 and i approved this message.

dang it - dave showed up. i felt qualified to talk about limits and sums...

another fun (for me at least) activity is that i get the kids to write a repeating decimal using their favorite number and then use infinite geometric sums to find what fraction makes that number. (i tell them they now have a favorite fraction.)

so...

.424242... = .42 + .0042 + .000042 + .00000042 ...

.42
---- =
1 - .01

.42/.99 = 14/33

No, you're wrong. The airplane's wheels spin freely, so the speed of the conveyor belt doesn't matter.
