It constantly fails and is just a waist of time. If they can't get it right why have it? I've seen a handful of games blown this year alone. Oftentimes refs intentionally blow calls to be safe because they no review has their ass and then you get the whole inconclusive thing which basically states a bad call can not be overturned if you are only 99% sure it was the wrong call.

In the UNC game forward progress was stopped and then there was a fumble which the ref immediately blew dead. Notre Dame stopped playing and UNC pounced on the ball after the whistle. The clock kept going and ran out. They reviewed the play and ruled that unc recovered a fumble.

1. You can't fumble after forward progress is stopped.
2. You can't overturn a play to be live after it is initially blown dead.

Had this been called right ND would have had a play.

Had there been no review ND would have had half the distance penalty on UNC and a play.

I think it was the MNF game 6 days ago or whatever, that fumble looked like it was moving in whoever's hand. I wanna say Peterson, was that on Monday? But they reviewed and said his hand was still on it so it wasn't going to be overturned when it obviously looked like it wasn't in his possession anymore.

disagree with teh forward progress thing

you gotta be on your feet and be pushing forward for 1-2 sec w/o moving forward for fwd prog. to be stopped

its not an instantaneous thing, or many of your favorite highlights of runningbacks breaking tackles making into the endzone would not exist

Its a bit of a judgement call. Obviously one guy giving a hit isn't stopping forward progress but once the defender "has" them and is driving them backwards its stop and definately when a bunch of defenders (4) "have" the guy and are driving him back or flipping him, its over.

ND ran a play (play clock stop) while Carolina had 12 men on the field and they reviewed a play prior to that play.. that shit is fucked up. ND should have had the ball on the 4 yard line with :01 remaining. Fuck it.

^ they spiked the ball with :01 remaining, go back and look at it. They cannot review a previous play once the ball has been snapped into another play. Another thing, that fumble that ND got that wasn't reviewed where UNC got 6 was a bit bogus as well.

no way was forward progress stopped, a running play where the pile moves lasts about four times that time, the guy just wasn't on his feet long enough to blow a whistle

and I don't think they ever did blow the play dead at that point

just to be clear, I don't think there was a "conspiracy" against ND (LOL) because I've never seen a game end quite like that, but I somewhat agree with the OP in that instant replay is flawed. I think it does more good than harm, but they need to sit down after the season and see if they can handle these types of situations better.

i remember seeing 0:00, not 0:01 after a spike

i would re-look at it but i did not care about that game enough to record it

There's no doubt it was a fumble, the ball came out while he was laying on the unc-ch players back. My question is. Did they not blow the whistle at that point? Thinking he was down before he fumbled it. And technically because of that it should've been ruled a catch.

hahaha get the fuck out of here with that, forward progress works when there has been at least more than a second on the contact, the game of football is based on fighting for position, when it's half a second thats pretty standard

The time ran out after the spike obviously. Why else would the entire UNC sideline go across the field to shake hands.

My only issue is that the refs spotted the ball for ND implying they called the play dead. Once a play is dead I was under the impression was that they couldn't review a fumble call, but maybe if it's obvious one team would have recovered any way.

If UNC wins next week at an improving UVa they will run the table in the ACC. Their tough games are behind them and the ACC didn't have any real good teams anyway...

[Edited on October 11, 2008 at 7:35 PM. Reason : and the fwd progress argument is beyond retarded... it isn't even CLOSE to being stopped...]

I do think it was a fumble, but his shoulders definitely hit the ground while he was laying on the UNC player. So if people think it came out after that then that's just not true.

edit: it sounds like the OP wants an ed hochuli result out of this game.

befoe all the shit you guys are talking about the UNC catch prior to that which was reviewed was clearly a catch, the ground caused the fumble but noooooooo the refs say incomplete pass.

The announcers almost walked out of the booth because of that bullshit call.

well if the receiver that caught that final pass wouldn't have tried to lateral they would have had a few seconds to break carolina's heart

well, aside from the last second instant replay possible folly, why the fuck didn't they review that fumble that ND recovered in the 3rd where UNC got 6 points? It was blatantly a fumble from the single replay they showed on tv.

^^^I just want to know the official rule on that. I thought you had to maintain the ball to the ground and he obviously lost it when his elbow hit. I don't know the official rule though, so i dunno.

wut, that was incomplete pass, he never had "football" possession of the ball. He had one foot down and upon immediate impact with the ground the ball was out, it was incomplete and the refs got that right.

Well if it was an incomplete pass then the refs blew the call. After the review the ref said it was a catch and a fumble recovered by unc-ch.

^^ you're not paying attention and ^^^ the ground cannot cause a fumble.... fumbling upon "immediate impact" = not a fumble when it's the ground you're impacting.

^^^ not sure you're paying attention... he was saying it was incomplete, not a fumble. And if he has control and possession of the football, it doesn't matter if the ball comes out when he hits the ground, it's still complete. Probably should've been a catch.

if you go up to catch a ball you have to have possession through your fall for it to be complete. Also nobodys talking about a fumble on that first play. if it was ruled a fumble it would've been a catch and fumble out of bounds.

the last play was clearly a fumble. I just know that its in the rules that you can't fumble while being drug backwards.

you do not have to have possession throughout the fall. The rules have changed, but if you catch it, land off balance, and then take 3 steps falling down and reach out for extra yardage and the ball pops out, it's complete.

Can we go back to the original question brought up in the thread cause I wondered this too about the last play of the game...

So the guy goes down and fumbles on his way down, while the ball is rolling on the ground the whistle blows (or did it not, I thought it had?) and the player is ruled down by contact and the clock should have stopped at :05. It seemed clear to me that ND thought the play was over and they were more concerned with getting up to the line of scrimmage then recovering a dead ball which also made me think the whistle blew. Then the refs review and reverse the ruling on the field and give UNC the ball. Is this something that is permitted by the rules? Even if there was a fumble when the whistle blows that's the end of the play right, like with Denver/Hochuli/the NFL a few weeks ago. Or do NCAA rules differ from the NFL on that?

Honestly, even if it wasn't the right call by the refs, I'd rather them get the right call then go by the book. I mean, that's the purpose of instant replay.

Wow, its really easy to remember the minority of times that official review gets it wrong, and so hard to remember the colossal mountain of times official review actually got a call correct or changed a call to what it should have been.

But no, you're absolutely right. If something isn't 100% perfect we should definitely not allow it to influence the game.

ESPN is getting better about this

anytime the balls gets inside the red zone their sideline camera moves to the goal line, and i'm sure when there isn't a sideline camera on a platform, they have a handheld one down there
