they 'are'

they are not 'likely to be'

I was thinking more of the game theory you pick up in intro level classes, prisoner's dilemma, Nash equilibriums and whatnot.

I work out at the gym for 3-4 hours at a time and help cddweller with social situations. I also spam Craigslist for a friend of mine for some cash.

Yes, I suck. Yes, you're better than me. I bow down and bask in your glory.

Well, I know that it wouldn't be a *real* job. But if it could buy some diapers and stuff. That would be pretty cool. Especially if it's just doing the same old stuff that I usually do. Which is gather information.

I think Spontaneous calculated it at around $12/hr if you answer one question per minute. The trick is to find a time of night where you get enough queries to fulfill that wage.

I'm basically a parasite to cddweller. NC State also sent me a refund check for something and my dad gave me some bonds that my great grandfather left me. Supposedly, my "real" job should start soon, but we'll see.

I guess anything is better than living in DH Hill.

I'm all the book you need on this topic. What exactly do you want to know? This is one of my favorite topics of Wildlife Science.

Basically, nature tends to take the path of least resistance.

General non-rigorous introduction, but interesting for practical applications is Thinking Strategically by Dixit and Nalebuff.

How much of a math or economics background do you have? Are you wanting a rigorous academic treatment of game theory, or are you just looking for something conceptual and pop science-ish?

I majored in marketing and film, so probably the latter, but if you know the titles for both categories, that would be great.

These may be a bit higher level than what would be appropriate for your background then, but try looking for some of these at a library and see if any of them are appealing...

An Introduction to Game Theory - Martin Osborne (more economic treatment)
Political Game Theory: An Introduction - Nolan McCarty, Adam Meirowitz (more poli-sci treatment)
Games And Information - Eric Rasmussen
Game Theory For Applied Economists - Robert Gibbons
Incentives: Motivation and the Economics of Information - Donald Campbell

The first two are probably the best, but the other three are also very good.

LOL i saw this thread and couldn't click fast enough. You got me pegged.

If you want a general intro to rational choice theory, check out:

"Notes on the Theory of Choice" by David M. Kreps (fairly technical)
"Choices: An Introduction to Decision Theory" by Michael D. Resnik (a much more basic introduction)

But that's not really game theory. Still, it's a good place to start. Decisions are basically games vs. nature, so there you go.

Shadowrunner gives good advice. There's a book Dover publishes, I think it's called "Games, Theory and Applications" that's pretty good.

What in particular are you interested in within game theory? Applications? Theory?

It's worth mentioning that game theory and decision theory are nothing but some chickenshit math you could explain to your grandma

It's all easy and straight-forward... the hard part is really being clever enough to come up with the set up in the first place

I've pretty much decided, recently so this may mean nothing , but I've been seriously considering at least finishing undergrad CS* and then going grad Econ

MARKET PREDICTION FOR THE BIG BUX and mostly something interesting enough to hold my attention for more than a few months before I get bored and quit / start fucking off

[Edited on October 24, 2008 at 3:01 AM. Reason : * or CSC as we humble farmers call with all due respect to crop science]
