And his response was: "You have been too successful in life to have severe A.D.D." pretty much solely based on my current job.

I was just sitting there all O-faced like, really, that is a medical opinion? Anyone else encountered anything like that before (for ADD specifically, but feel free to relay other ridiculous sounding diagnoses)

\/ That's what made me do the doubletake, because I told him I specifically wanted to seek any and all alternatives to Adderall/amphetamines first.

No, but that's something worth reporting.

Just because you've been successful with it doesn't mean it's not a problem.

Hahaha, awesome.

I went to the same doctor for this white shit growing under my big toe nail. He said it was a harmless fungus that would take 5-7 years to work it's way out. 4 months later, it's completely gone.

He also prescribed me some meds for insomnia, which, not to much of a suprise, haven't worked at all.

Generally speaking you'll have better luck seeking treatment for something like A.D.D. with a psychiatrist. They're more likely to understand that while you've been performing acceptably, you feel a deficit and at times are impaired. More importantly, though, they understand that you're not coming back if they don't give you some form of treatment

If it's caused issues in your personal life that might be worth mentioning.

Just tell your doctor you have 15 babies on the way and the AIDS because you forgot to wear condoms with the prostitutes and you also forgot to pull out.

I actually had a doctor push ADHD meds, for this reason.
Of course, same doc said to monitor my blood pressure for spikes caused by said med, and to just go ahead and use the blood pressure stations at walmart to do this.

I did not go back.

Definitely
- time for a new doc
- add a psychiatrist to the doc roster

There's far more to it than not being able to concentrate.

They say prolonged amphetamine use can cause brain shrinkage and atrophy.

everything makes your brain shrink- vegetarian diet, drinking, fasting, etc

none of these studies have suggested that having a smaller brain inhibits proper function

yeah you need to go see a psychiatrist or psycho-educational consultant and get evaluated

but you don't want to just start taking ADD meds if you don't need them (particularly the stimulant ones) cause they will lower your life expectancy

The only reason I went in the first place is because my health insurance is 100% coverage of everything. No copays, no cost for prescriptions.

I spent a full day calling psychiatrists back in the summer. The first two said they didn't believe A.D.D. existed, the last two both said they could see me for an initial appointment in November (this was in JUNE). I can see why people don't get treated for their nagging issues, it's a fucking pain in the ass to even see a doctor for anything non-life threatening

If you're still eligible to drop in at student health, the psychiatry guys there were usually able to setup an appointment with a few weeks notice.

They gave me lots of pills when I went to my doctor.

Then again, you drive an Elise and make a lot more money than I do.

^It's an exige (and he tries to drive it )

Also Doctors pretty much won't do anything beyond subscribe medicine. I know it was said earlier, but any alternatives would be best sought through a psychiatrist.

And, I would go to see one of these two. There are many issues that could be masked as "ADD."

I really wanted to look at behavior modification therapy with a psychologist (aka, no drugs), but I dont even know where to start.

^One of them referred me to another psychiatrist and hung up on me. The other one told me it would be a waste of my time, that all ADD sufferers are liars and it's a false condition brought on by trauma or substance abuse. (which is complete bullshit, because I've been this way my whole life and never had either of those issues)

I live in Washington state, and I went to the health center many times while I was at NCSU, other than initial diagnosis they were zero help because they can't prescribe medicine and I couldn't afford it anyway, and couldn't afford their refferals to psychologists or psychiatrists for regular appointments.

the diagnosis isn't made just on the presence of symptoms but also the degree to which they impair your life. he inferred the latter, or lack thereof, from your current position

Look for someone who specializes in cognitive behavior therapy. It helps.

wow...I was prescribed Adderall the whole time I was at State (the third go-round). but then I had a documented history of ADD from a respected psychologist. The counseling center was actually of some help, and the one staff psychiatrist saw no harm in prescribing ADD meds for me.

I can't function for shit without my Adderall. Interestingly enough, I come home less tired and less stressed after a day at work. I only take it when I need it, and I don't crash. I can actually do my job after taking it. Without it, it's excruciatingly hard to concentrate. Folks who've known me for a long time know that the only thing shorter than my peter is my attention span.

Tyler, find a new doctor, playa.

Also, don't you come down here every few months? Schedule something with a doc in Raleigh and see if you get different feedback. (I dunno how that'd work but it's worth a shot)

i think most people consider success to be related to how severe your disorder may be... if you have had much success your add must not have prevented that thus it could not be as severe as others
i have pretty bad add, it hasnt kept me from being successful but it does keep me from accomplishing tasks as quickly as most would like
