I have a media center remote (the microsoft one) and I got the drivers to install on Server 2008.

It works just fine with Media Portal, but I want to launch Media Portal by using a button on the media remote. I tried the plugin on the Media Portal website, but it doesn't work in 64-bit Vista or Server '08.

Is there any software out there that lets you map IR remote buttons to functions?

Several reasons, some of which being I have a valid key and license for it and I use a number of the services associated with it.

But that's beside the point. I just want to launch an application using a remote control.

^^ because these kids think that they're proving something to people by using enterprise level products at home to do their intertron browsing

All of this is beside the point! I don't have a license for Vista. I do for Server 2008. My only OS choices for this computer were Server 2008 x64 or XP Pro x64. That's all I have licenses for. I had some problems with XP so I installed Server when I replaced the hard drives.

Those weren't your only choices, unless you are running itaniums. Ain't nuthin wrong with a 32bit os. Unless you are running some specialty production software or doing heavily customized scientific calculations, 64bit is both overkill and going to be a shitty end-user system to run on.

And AFAIK you are shit-outta-luck with remapping the button functions on a Media Center Remote. If you manage to figure out a way, let me know too

You should be able to use a program like HIP to do this.

As a side note, just don't have your MCE remote's receiver anywhere near an XBox 360.

They were my only choices because they are the only operating systems I have valid licenses to. I wasn't about to go blow a fuckload of money on another OS because you don't like the operating systems I own.

if you can get your OS to install the drivers, and if the remote is indeed recognized by media portal, then it's sending a signal

AFAIK, if it sends a signal, you should be able to remap it.
try this: http://www.autohotkey.com/ (a htpc user favorite)
