are we talking real biodiesel or just alternative fuels to save some cash? i'm down for the later and have been doing it a little, but screw the time/effort of the former.
^^^^^eh? i bought diesel here today for $2.99... not much difference. 10/29/2008 10:08:29 PM |

^WOW THAT SITE IS SO NEW AND INFORMATIVE, NO ONE WITH A DIESEL HAS EVER EVER SEEN SUCH A THING BEFORE WTFBBQB100!!!
^^not really, it's just the effort of gathering materials, building your processing system. keeping everything going and doing the work takes time, but there's nothing really hard about it. i personally can't see spending the time and effort on brewing "true" biodiesel. i'd rather just filter grease, used atf, or whatever. 11/4/2008 2:37:59 PM |

from what I've been able to find out, the problem is getting the grease unless you know somebody with a hookup. 11/4/2008 4:53:11 PM |

^very true. with such increased popularity, most places have contracts with recycling companies. the ones that don't practically have people lined up outside waiting to get it. then, you've got big companies like mcdonalds that are realizing the money they're throwing away and are converting their delivery trucks to run off the stuff.

there are about a million sites up for making biodiesel, hell there is even a huge ass co-op already in pittsboro that does classes on how to build your own reactor and make it. works better than svo or atf and there arent any conversions to be made unlike the svo.
and you want to call 2.99 cheap? one of my instructors makes his own for about .75 cents a gallon and still gets 30mpg outta his 88 mercedes...
we built our own reactor out of a water heater in my last automotive class and have been makin the stuff in about 40gal batches ever since... 11/5/2008 11:41:17 PM |

This is exactly what I was afraid of. Thanksgiving is coming up, a lot of folks fry turkeys, would the old turkey oil be worth getting?11/6/2008 8:00:20 AM |

yes but you will want to filter it first
piedmont biofuels (co-op) uses a lot of chicken fat, but i think the process might have to be altered slightly and i heard that it will gel up worse at low temps.

Speedsta800 All American 683 Posts user info edit post |
you can build a reactor for like 300 bones pump and all, the expensive ass units are just glorified versions of what you would build at home.
yeah collecting oil is an issue, you gotta hit up the mom and pop places and the non-chain restaurants that dont have huge contracts with companies to pick up their oil.
and yes biodiesel does gel up at a higher temp than petro-diesel but by simply adding the right amount of an anti-gel agent(found out that the cheap wal-mart shit works the best) you can keep it from gelling down to 25*, if there is any issue of it getting colder than that then you can cut it with petro-diesel and it wont gel anytime soon in our NC winters... 11/6/2008 10:33:44 PM |
